Putintseva vs Bucsa Prediction: Bucsa Slightly Undervalued in Battle of Consistent Baseliner

  • Prediction: Bucsa to win
  • Best Odds: 2.91
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 3:15 am UK Time on March 19th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

I’m not doubting that the Kazakh should be favored in this matchup. She’s got a bit more pop to her groundstrokes and is the more natural hard courter.

My issue with the pricing comes primarily from the fact that both these women lack some power and we should see plenty of long, close rallies. That should produce relatively close matches more often than not for me, and that makes me like the higher odds on Bucsa.

Yulia Putintseva Recent Form

Ranked 68th in the world, Putintseva has had the season you’d expect, winning just a few more matches than she’s lost while playing a high volume of tournaments.

The fiery 29-year-old is coming off a fourth-round run in Indian Wells, but she’s also racked up a lot of losses to fairly mid-range players as well – a tier of player that I would make the case Bucsa is in.

She has a pair of losses to Xinyu Wang, and then losses to Rebeka Masarova, Bernarda Pera, Magdalena Frech, and Anastasia Zakharova. None of those players are world-beaters, and I’m not sure I’d categorize any of them as decent losses.

Cristina Bucsa Recent Form

It hasn’t been a start to the season to write home about for the Spaniard, either. Being more comfortable on clay and underpowered, that’s a bit more to be expected.

She’s lost more matches than she’s won in 2024, but a lot of those have come to players like Linda Noskova (one of the rising stars in the sport), Elena Rybakina, and Anna Kalinskaya (another of the rising stars in women’s tennis).

The primary concern would be that Bucsa has lost a fair number of matches in a lopsided fashion. That isn’t the most inspiring string of results, but it’s likely a big part of why we’re seeing a decent amount of value on her to win this match.

Yulia Putintseva vs Cristina Bucsa H2H – Stat of the Match

No prior matches to evaluate between the two. That’s somewhat surprising, considering both are tour-level regulars and both can be found relatively often in WTA 250-level fields as well.
