Though it’s tough to ignore the firepower advantage the bigger of the two Frenchmen has in this one, it was actually Mayot who corroborated what the statistics showed last year by talking about the courts eating up a decent amount of pace from serves and groundstrokes in Montpellier.
That bodes well for him, seeing as he doesn’t have the most powerful game, but he moves his opponents around well, is incredibly consistent, giving very little away to his opponents and certainly has the ability to potentially keep that ball on the Rinderknech backhand, where he can expect to commit far less unforced errors in those crosscourt exchanges.
Rinderknech may well serve him off the court, but with a 40% break even percentage, there’s plenty to like in this matchup on the Mayot side as well.
Arthur Rinderknech Recent Form
The world No. 61 has begun the 2025 season 0-3, including a near-comeback against an ailing Frances Tiafoe that he somehow couldn’t complete down in Melbourne at the Australian Open.
I’d say he’s played a higher level of competition that Mayot is likely to present, but if I’m being honest, losses to Chris O’Connell and Yoshihito Nishioka are not exactly excusable, especially when both come in straight sets.
He does have a booming serve and forehand, but that’s about all he has. He does tend to come to net, but often makes mistakes on straightforward volleys. He doesn’t have a reliable backhand and his movement is far from impressive.
I don’t mind opposing him when he’s a fairly large favourite in conditions that may not be best for him.
Harold Mayot Recent Form
Mayot isn’t likely to be happy with his start to 2025 either. He did reach the quarters in Canberra and only lost to phenom Joao Fonseca, but he is still mired in a three-match losing streak and has lost his last two to Benoit Paire and Yasutake Uchiyama – both veterans that aren’t at their best anymore.
Perhaps the 22-year-old is simply too underpowered for this level, but I think his first serve is good enough and his tactical awareness serves him well in a matchup like this.
