I’m happy to oppose the always-entertaining Frenchman coming off a very long match. Now, he has had a day off between contests thanks to the scheduling of the two-week Masters, but the way Monfils has struggled physically the last few years, I’m not sure that is reason enough not to consider the potential fatigue in this handicap.

Furthermore, he’s playing one of the heavier hitters in terms of spin rate on the forehand side in Ruud, and unless he shakes up his gameplan, I’m not sure he’ll be able to rush the backhand of the Norwegian into leaving enough balls short or committing errors.

After the Ruud vs Monfils match wraps up, there’s still plenty of action from the BNP Paribas Open to take place on Wednesday. Head on over to our Expert Insights section for more tips from the tennis in Indian Wells!

Casper Ruud Recent Form

After a weaker start to his 2023 campaign that was attributed to his jam-packed offseason schedule of exhibition tennis, Ruud decided to approach things a different way before the 2024 season. That decision appears to be paying dividends, as Ruud not only looked better in the quicker conditions down in Australia but has also put together a nice stretch on the slower hard courts in Los Cabos, Acapulco, and now Indian Wells.

He may have lost the finals in each of the Mexican tournaments, but with the form the Aussies he lost happen to be in, they aren’t the worst of losses. Jordan Thompson had the week of his life and Alex de Minaur has showcased an improved brand of tennis in 2024 that has vaulted him into the top-10 for the first time. He was also the champion in Acapulco a year ago, so it’s a place de Minaur enjoys playing.

Ruud’s start in California has also been promising. With higher bouncing courts and the weight he can deliver on his forehand, he’s yet to drop a set, getting by the big serving and hitting Lukas Klein, and then dispatching young gun Arthur Fils with relative ease in the third round

With his style being a perfect fit for these courts and conditions, his opponent getting up there in age and coming off a three-hour match and his form of late, I’m surprised that this isn’t a -4 game handicap

Gael Monfils Recent Form

Monfils got off to a slow start this season, but his last few weeks have been impressive for the 37-year-old.

He managed to get to the semifinals in Doha and nearly beat Ugo Humbert twice in as many weeks when he was up a set on him in the opening round in Dubai (his countryman has played incredible tennis since late last year and went on to win that tournament) and he’s now picked up wins against Hubert Hurkacz and Cam Norrie so far on the west coast of the United States.

Those matches both took three sets and as I mentioned earlier, the latter against Norrie saw him trailing by a set and a break and going well over the three-hour mark.

Monfils’ serve appeared to take a step back – something Ruud is more than capable of taking advantage of – and he was far too defensive for large portions of that match (something even he admitted to in the post-match interview).

Monfils is one of the best showmen tennis has had in a long, long time, moves around the court incredibly well, can make shots most can only dream of, serves well, and can hit off both wings. He’s also physically frail nowadays and often lets himself get too passive and gets lulled into making errors.

I can’t see the pace re-appearing all of a sudden in this one as he plays more. If anything, that should continue to drop off.

Casper Ruud vs Gael Monfils H2H – Stat of the Match

The only match that these two have played against one another came about six years ago in Quito – a stop on the ATP Tour that no longer exists. The extreme altitude clay conditions are fairly unique, and tough to take at face value at other tournaments.

That match went to Monfils in three sets, at a much different time in both of these guys’ careers.
