Well, we correctly identified that Stefano Travaglia would push a returning Tallon Griekspoor. Sadly he lost two extremely tight sets and couldn’t get us a nice underdog win on Tuesday.
For Wednesday, let’s preview the match between Sebastian Baez and Pedro Cachin from Lyon, France.
In this article:
May 24th, 10:00 (UK Time)
It was a tough loss with Travaglia, but in this industry, short memories for losses are key and you simply can’t be afraid to continue attacking underdogs to win when the price dictates it.
This is another such situation.
I have no problem saying that Baez is the better overall clay-court player here, but I do have a problem with the valuation on Cachin only winning this match about a third of the time.
The two Argentines are both naturals on the dirt, both have decent, if not overpowering serves that they back up fairly well on clay, and they’re both solid from the baseline.
The younger of the two has already risen to a higher point in the rankings and is more established on the ATP Tour, but his season hasn’t been the strongest to this point and in this particular matchup there isn’t anything he really does at a much higher level.
He narrowly beat a guy who is at his best off clay in his opening-round tilt and he’s lost several times already on the red stuff in 2023 to players in the same talent range as his compatriot.
I’m not as sure why the market is off on this one. It could be the fact that Cachin needed three sets to beat Gael Monfils, who is still getting back to his best (though he has played eight matches now and has looked a bit better of late) or perhaps the view is that he’s just a Challenger Tour level player.
Either way, I disagree that he’s this large of an underdog in this contest and I’m happy to jump in and back another fairly cheaply-priced underdog on Wednesday.
Odds as at 2:00 am UK Time on May 23rd, 2023. Odds may now differ.
