Shintaro Mochizuki vs Harold Mayot Best Bet: Wednesday, April 12th

Three-set loss for Harold Mayot against Shintaro Mochizuki, who did manage to keep his win streak alive.

For Wednesday’s Challenger bet, we’re going right back to a Mochizuki match, as he now takes on Zsombor Piros.

Shintaro Mochizuki vs Zsombor Piros Preview

April 12th, 11:00 (UK Time)

Well, I think you know where I’m going with this one.

I’ll reiterate here, this is still the first time we’ve ever seen the Japanese No. 6 have any kind of sustained success on red clay.

Piros, on the other hand, isn’t just more competent on the surface, but he’s actually a stronger opponent than Mayot was. Having bet the Frenchman as a short underdog, I’ll gladly take an even more developed and accomplished favourite as the slight favourite.

He’s in some pretty strong form himself, having reached four straight quarterfinals this season. In an odd turn of events, he’s also lost to the eventual champion in three of those four events.

He’s had success in Split before (he reached the final last year, which could also be providing some extra incentive as he has to defend those points), and has a more well-rounded game than Mochizuki.

Shintaro Mochizuki vs Zsombor Piros Best Bet

We’re seeing some nice value on this number for Piros to cover this handicap on Wednesday, primarily because Mochizuki managed to win an event last week and is in form, and also the fact that he beat Piros head-to-head just last week.

The market tends to like head-to-head wins, and that’s fine, but it’s important to stress that a singular victory shouldn’t really move one’s true price on a match too much.

Piros still has more pop to his game, a better history overall on clay courts and is the more well-rounded tennis player. I was also thoroughly impressed by his win over a tough first-round opponent in his compatriot Fabian Marozsan.

Regardless of that loss last week to this same opponent, I have him as a 4 to 4.5 game favourite in this one.

  • Selection: Piros -3 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.81 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 2:00 am on April 12th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
