Juan Pablo Varillas got us again on Friday, as he took out Lorenzo Musetti in impressive fashion to sink our bet.
It’s a new week, with ATP events in Doha, Marseille and Rio de Janeiro. For Monday’s selection, we’ll dive into the match between Stanislas Wawrinka and Zizou Bergs.
In this article:
February 20th, 18:00 (UK Time)
Great matchup to end the day in the south of France. Should see some incredible ball striking in this one, as Wawrinka and Bergs can both really hit through their forehands and play some aggressive tennis from the baseline.
Wawrinka is coming off his best tournament of the year in Rotterdam, where he reached the quarterfinals by defeating Alexander Bublik and Richard Gasquet.
That’s where the run ended, however, with Jannik Sinner sending him packing with relative ease.
With Bublik out of form and Gasquet well past his prime, I’m still not convinced by the veteran Swiss.
Bergs can struggle for consistency and can come up with some befuddling losses (look at his Davis Cup results – beating Soonwoo Kwon, losing to Seong Chan Hong), but he is one heck of a talent.
He struggled in the slower conditions last week in Rotterdam, and it’s likely the reason we’re getting him at such an undervalued number in this matchup on Monday.
As hot and cold as Bergs can be, his talent level can’t be denied. He has the big game to succeed in these conditions, and this isn’t the same Wawrinka as we saw in the past.
If you’re going to give me odds higher than 3.00 here to back a talent like the Belgian, I’ll take it against the 37-year-old.
Odds as at 5:00 am UK Time on February 19th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
