If we’re going to bet a tiebreak to occur in a match, we want a few things going for us. First, a pair of serve centric players. Next, quicker conditions. Third, if neither guy is a particularly strong returner? Well that works in our favour as well.

That is precisely the case in this contest. These two typically compete on different tours, but in altitude with both possessing big serves, the conditions should really tighten things up more than the odds suggest in the moneyline market.

With so many other markets being priced in conjunction with the moneyline odds, I think we’ve been presented with a nice opportunity to hunt for a tiebreak with a big price.

Finally, Struff has been prone to play long sets and tiebreak a lot this year in quicker conditions. Whether during the early-season fast hard court swing, the elevated clay Masters event in Madrid or during the grass swing, the big German was tangled up in a lot of “first to seven points wins the set” situations.

Jan Lennard Struff Recent Form

As one would expect from someone that plays so many close sets, Struff has a lot of tournaments with one or two wins before he’s sent packing.

His game is fairly straightforward, with a monster serve, unbridled aggression and a willingness to come to net. That leads to a lot of cheap points, but he can also be error prone and isn’t exactly the most adept on return, which means he rarely finds dominant wins despite his skill set.

With a big swinging player on the other side of the net and the thinner air, I don’t think this is the match I’d expect him to find the dominant performance.

Leandro Riedi Recent Form

The Swiss young gun has won a whole lot of matches so far in 2024, and to no one’s surprise, they’ve almost all come on quicker surfaces or in quicker conditions. Indoor hard courts, grass courts and a run to the final of the Madrid Challenger in altitude.

That’s to be expected with his huge serve and incredibly flat groundstrokes. He also goes for his shots, which means the margin for error in his game isn’t just reduced by the lower net clearance he hits with, but also by the aggressive mindset he plays with.

That means clay courts at sea level? Not his friend. Quicker conditions though? The power works well to win points and he isn’t dragged into longer rallies where he becomes increasingly likely to commit unforced errors.

This is a venue where he should be okay and an opponent that certainly doesn’t look to play many long rallies himself.

Jan Lennard Struff vs Leandro Riedi H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have played once, back at the beginning of the 2023 campaign in Australia at a Challenger in the capital region.

Unsurprisingly it was a close contest that went to a third set and featured a tiebreak and a 7-5 set along the way.
