Tennis Picks Today: February 2nd

  1. Marozsan vs Koepfer: Koepfer to win
  2. Kolar vs Naw: Kolar to win

After a 71 unforced error performance from Anastasia Potapova, Jelena Ostapenko came up big with a huge come-from-behind performance to end the losing skid on the previews.

For Friday, we’ll end the week with one preview from the Davis Cup featuring Fabian Marozsan vs Dominik Koepfer and another from the Challenger Tour level with Zdenek Kolar vs Hazem Naw from the Koblenz Open.

With Alexander Zverev out of this tie for Team Germany, it’ll be Koepfer stepping in to try and get the first point on the board for his country in Hungary.

It’ll be a hostile crowd, but I actually like the lefty’s chances in this matchup. Marozsan has burst onto the scene in the last eight months or so, and the odds here reflect that. He has still had his fair share of poor matches – especially on hard courts – in the last little while, however, and I have to wonder if he’s being overvalued in a match against a pretty strong hard courter who plays with solidity and can construct points really well.

Throw in odds well above even money and I’m happy to take a shot with Koepfer to kick off proceedings in Tatabanya.

Read on for more expert insights.

Fabian Marozsan Recent Form

In what should be his first full season on the ATP Tour, Marozsan has been okay to start. He’s 3-3 to kick off his campaign, but his three wins down under came against a returning Marin Cilic (who also is probably past his prime), Francisco Cerundolo (who is best on clay and had a dreadful January) and Gael Monfils (which needed a third-set tiebreak).

Then there was the bad – he was crushed by Taylor Fritz after winning the opening set, lost badly to Roberto Bautista Agut who is on the decline and Ben Shelton in rather routine fashion.

Even his data doesn’t really love his start. His hold plus break percentage to start the year sits at under 100%, a below-average number, and there isn’t really any particular statistic that stands out as particularly impressive.

This is a match the market clearly expects Marozsan to win, but I’m still not sold on him based on his results or statistics on a hard court. He is, after all, a clay courter by nature and playing a solid lefty with plenty of variety that prefers hard courts and has quietly had a strong start to his season could be a tall task.

Dominik Koepfer Recent Form

I think if you asked Koepfer about how he feels regarding his start to the 2024 season, the world No. 60 wouldn’t be too unhappy. Sure, he lost in the opening round of the Australian Open, but he played eventual semifinalist Zverev very close there, and he won one of the better Challenger tournaments we have down under in Canberra, dropping just one set en route to the title.

He has a decent serve, plays solid tennis from the baseline, doesn’t have a noticeable weakness and can mix in slices and dropshots. He can be overpowered at times, and that keeps his ceiling low, but his all-around game can be tough to beat if you aren’t playing your best.

Fabian Marozsan vs Dominik Koepfer H2H – Stat of the Match

This is the first meeting between the pair.

In terms of the number to watch? How about Marozsan against lefties. Since the start of the 2023 season, the 24-year-old has gone just 1-4 against southpaws, with the lone win coming against the now-retired Andrea Arnaboldi.

Let’s see if Koepfer can continue that trend.

As much form as Naw carries into this match, I do think a lot of it is a mirage. Don’t get me wrong, his story is an inspirational one, coming from war-torn Syria to train and live in Germany and now making his first Challenger run there, but he’s up against a much better player who is also comfortable playing in these conditions and plays a similar style at a higher level.

I’ll take the Czech here at an event he had plenty of success at a year ago.

Read on for more expert insights.

Zdenek Kolar Recent Form

Koblenz has been a welcome sight for the 27-year-old, who has always been more fond of clay-court tennis.

Quicker courts haven’t been his bread and butter, but both last year and this year, we’ve seen the courts slow down in western Germany.

After a few losses to Brandon Holt and the uber-talented, yet constantly disappointing Zizou Bergs, Kolar has reached the quarterfinal stage without having dropped a set this week. His first serve looked strong a year ago on these courts, and he’s won at least 75% of points when landing the first serve in each of his opening two matches this year.

Combined with his defensive abilities and ball retrieval skills, finding quick, cheap points can be a really tough combination to beat.

As impressive as Naw’s run has been, I’m not sure he has the necessary skills to topple Kolar on Friday.

Hazem Naw Recent Form

While a 14-2 start to the year is impressive, it must be said the vast majority of those victories are against fairly low-level opposition.

His best wins have come this week, and even his main draw match wins have come against quick-court specialists Billy Harris and Oscar Otte. Even then, it took a pair of 7-5 sets to get by the former and the latter was a comeback from 2-6, 3-5* 30-0 down – two points from defeat.

The slower conditions allow Naw to use his hands and crafty play a bit more, but that may not be as effective against a strong defensive and consistent player in Kolar as it was against two relatively poor movers and serve-oriented opponents.

Zdenek Kolar vs Hazem Naw H2H – Stat of the Match

With Naw being outside the top 400 entering this week and playing almost exclusively on the ITF Tour and Kolar being a Challenger Tour journeyman, it’s not surprising that these two haven’t played before.

Let’s see if Naw can outduel Kolar on courts that Kolar has tended to enjoy since the start of this event last year, or if Kolar will move to 6-1 in his last seven matches in Koblenz.
