Thiago Tirante vs Renzo Olivo Best Bet: Wednesday, March 29th

Much like the women’s article, the men’s article was also a loser. Facundo Bagnis’ career might be closer to done than I had anticipated, as he put up little resistance in being sent packing in straight sets.

For Wednesday, let’s look to the Challenger Tour event in the Mexican capital once again, and the matchup between Thiago Tirante and Renzo Olivo.

Thiago Tirante vs Renzo Olivo Preview

March 29th, 19:30 (UK Time)

A day after watching Julia Grabher hit a never-ending stream of errors in altitude on clay, it may not seem wise to go back to the well and back an explosive forehand against someone with far fewer weapons.

It’s important to trust the process – even through the downswings – in this industry though, and once again, I do believe that Tirante should be under the 1.50 price range considering his game and that of his countryman.

Tirante has an incredibly impressive forehand for being a Challenger Tour player, with its pace and heaviness proving to be a tough combination on clay.

He’s also had success at extreme altitude in the past, as the Ambato Challenger has probably been the one tournament he’s consistently made deep runs at.

The players he’s vanquished in those two runs are no slouches either. Facundo Mena, Gerald Melzer and Juan Pablo Varillas are all strong clay courters in elevation, and the one man to stop him last season in Ambato – Facundo Bagnis – has had a rough 2023, but was still a tour-level player on the dirt in 2022.

Coupled with his dominant first-round win, it certainly feels like the young Argentine has the lungs to deal with the thinner air, as well as the weapons to exploit the conditions on court.

Thiago Tirante vs Renzo Olivo Best Bet

Throw in the rather poor form of Olivo and I think the price being over 1.60 in this matchup for Tirante is quite generous.

Olivo picked up just his second win in seven events with his opening-round victory against young Italian Luciano Darderi.

Considering the 21-year-old had only ever played in 400-700 metres of altitude (Mexico City is at around 2,250 metres), it would make sense that he’d need at least some sort of adjustment period.

Olivo did have success during this swing last season winning two matches at this event, but beating a player like Nick Chappell on clay in a third-set tiebreak is far from being a win that one would write home about, and he did lose to a player whose game resembles that of Tirante in Felipe Meligeni Alves.

I’m happy to back Tirante here, and also look to play him on the handicap.

  • Selection: Tirante to win
  • Best Odds: 1.63 Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 4/10
  • Bonus: Tirante -2.5 Games at 1.93 with Pinnacle, using 2/10 stakes.

Odds as at 2:00 am on March 28th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
