Thursday Tennis Best Bet: ATP Atlanta, John Isner vs Ben Shelton
John Isner vs Ben Shelton Best Bet: Thursday, July 28th
Filip Misolic comes up with the goods against a clearly-fatiguing Pablo Andujar down the stretch in that match to get us a much-needed winner.
For Thursday’s best bet on the board for the men’s side, it’s off to the other side of the pond and to the Atlanta Open, where the quick courts provide for a contrast in viewing relative to the two clay events taking place in Europe.

John Isner vs Ben Shelton Preview
Friday, Jul 29th. 00:20 (UK Time)
This match could be a treat, with John Isner – who went to college in the state of Georgia – and Ben Shelton – who is an Atlanta native and goes to school just south in the state of Florida – both likely to draw significant crowd support.
Isner is also a six-time champion at the event and a finalist an additional three times.
That may lead some to think backing Ben Shelton in this spot is crazy, but the American phenom is one of the future stars of the ATP Tour and getting prices like these won’t last long.
By now, those who are familiar with tennis are well-acquainted with Isner’s game. Massive serve, with a bit of baseline ability and an ability to come to net and finish points effectively.
As for Shelton, the 19-year-old NCAA singles champion, is making waves at the Challenger Tour level, having reached three semifinals in just four events played this season.
The lefty is equipped with a massive serve and forehand combination, whist also possessing surprisingly strong rally tolerance and a strong backhand with decent consistency. He also moves extremely well, making him a well-rounded player and future star of the game.
With the ability to hit those lefty serves out wide from the ad-court side, and the advantage of the big lefty serve hitting into the Isner backhand in crosscourt rallies, while also having a strong enough backhand for the reverse, he matches up well with his compatriot.
Shelton is also coming off a win in the first round against another serve-oriented net rusher in Ramkumar Ramanathan. Now, that is not to say that Isner and Ramanathan are the same player. Isner is clearly a much tougher opponent. The point is that Shelton should be well prepared for the style he’s going to come up against in his second round tilt.
John Isner vs Ben Shelton Best Bet
I could make a case here for several bets. With both likely to win the overwhelming majority of their service games and Shelton matching up decently with the tall American, I’m happy to take the games on offer here with the young gun.
While neither may be particularly likely to find breaks of serve, Shelton is more athletic, has the stronger backhand wing and is the better returner of the two, so the possibilities are higher for him than Isner in that regard as well.
