Jenson Brooksby vs Mackenzie McDonald Best Bet: Thursday, September 22nd

A combination of disappointing play on serve from Richard Gasquet and an incredible level from Dominic Thiem means Wednesday’s selection goes down from Metz.

For Thursday’s ATP wager, it’s back to sunny San Diego, California for a late start, and the match between two native Californians that we’re looking to preview. Jenson Brooksby looks to get on track after a disappointing summer post-Atlanta, while Mackenzie McDonald looks to build on a dominant win over Henri Laaksonen to get his form back on track.

Jenson Brooksby vs Mackenzie McDonald Preview

September 22nd, Time TBD

Not only is this one a matchup of two men playing in their home state, but they’re both former collegiate players that played for rival Los Angeles universities (Brooksby for USC and McDonald for UCLA). If there was ever going to be a hyped-up crowd, this match should be the one that brings it.

That’s about all the crowd has to cheer for between these two at the moment, though.

Neither is in particularly good form, with Brooksby being ousted in dominant fashion at the U.S. Open in the third round by eventual-champion Carlos Alcaraz (keep in mind, however, Alcaraz had several far tougher tests than Brooksby provided). His wins that week came against a fatigued Cincinnati champion (Borna Coric) and an injured clay courter (Dusan Lajovic) who retired in the third set of that match. Prior to that, he was sent packing in rather easy fashion by Tommy Paul in Cincinnati, Roberto Bautista Agut in Montreal and Yoshihito Nishioka in Washington. His only win along the way? Against the mercurial Alexander Bublik. Why he’s a massive favourite in this one’s a mystery to me.

McDonald hasn’t been in great form either, failing to win two matches at any event since the French Open. The matchup, however, doesn’t bode poorly for the Berkeley native. The variety and consistency of Brooksby won’t bother the consistent McDonald and without an overpowering serve, McDonald should be able to pressure his opponent as much as he sees pressure in his own service games.

Jenson Brooksby vs Mackenzie McDonald Best Bet

This match may be the furthest thing from pretty, considering how these two have played over the last few months, but the disparity in pricing certainly creates an intriguing opportunity to take a position.

I’m not necessarily high on McDonald’s prospects, but I’m definitely backing him to win here more than 30% of the time, which is about where the betting markets have him at the moment.

With Brooksby able to post some lopsided set scores if he is on his game, and McDonald not possessing the most potent of serves, I’m more inclined to back the underdog by taking the +1.5 sets market, rather than the games. Backing him to win at a smaller stake is also an option in this spot.

  • Selection: McDonald +1.5 sets
  • Best Odds: 1.84 (Pinnacle)
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 09:30 am on September 22nd, 2022. Odds may now differ.
