Jon Reid’s Tsitsipas vs Seyboth Wild prediction is for Seyboth Wild to keep things close.
Odds updated at 4:00 am UK Time on October 17th, 2024.
Seyboth Wild is more of a clay courter himself, but he’s starting to find more and more traction on hard courts. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen him beat Dan Evans, lose a pair of close sets to Daniil Medvedev and he has beaten two strong Challenger players that enjoy quicker courts this week.
The match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard should serve him well here as well. Tsitsipas is obviously a much better player, but the big serve and one-handed backhand, along with the poor returning are all similar characteristics between the two.
If Seyboth Wild can land enough first serves, he should be able to rack up the holds of serve and keep things close fairly easily.
Tsitsipas did manage to win a pair of matches in Shanghai, despite that event being played on fairly quick hard courts. He did struggle mightily on return against Kei Nishikori for the most part and his lone straightforward win was against Alexandre Muller – not known for his firepower and big serve.
Tokyo saw him lose in his first match, and he did the same in New York at the year’s final major as well.
He’s not playing a hard-court natural this time out, but Seyboth Wild does possess the requisite firepower to give him trouble.
As I mentioned above, Seyboth Wild has taken a step forward on quicker courts this season.
He started off looking lost at the United Cup, but did push Andrey Rublev to five sets in Melbourne and won four matches between qualifying and the main draw in Miami, including a big upset of Taylor Fritz.
For the Brazilian, it isn’t about not having the firepower to succeed on the surface. It was more about the timing and pace of play. With experience, those issues appear to be dissipating and we’re seeing him start to compete with and push some really strong players.
I expect that to continue on Thursday.
This is the first meeting between the two.
