It’s a match the tennis world should be tuned into, as the most recent NCAA men’s tennis champion and emerging prospect, Shelton, takes on Sonego in the opening round in America’s midwest.
While it may not feature some of the most prominent names on the ATP Tour, it’s a great test for one of the sport’s most promising young stars, as he squares off with a legitimate tour-level calibre player – even if it’s on a surface the Italian may not prefer.
Equipped with a massive lefty serve and forehand, a much sturdier backhand than most his age, the ability to stick around in prolonged rallies and solid athleticism, the American has all the tools to ascend to the upper echelons of the sport.
While still untested at the highest level, he’s had some incredible success in just a few short months, reaching four Challenger Tour semifinals already.
While I’m not confident he necessarily takes down Sonego in this opening-round encounter, I certainly believe he keeps things much closer than the odds would indicate.
Considering Sonego has also had success with his big serve on quicker courts, and the bookmakers and market pricing totals at 22.5 games as they do in much slower conditions, the over looks to be a solid play here.

With lengthy sets and three-set matches the theme of the day on Monday, there’s no reason to believe the second day won’t follow suit. Not simply because trends are meant to continue, but more because the quicker courts in Cincinnati lend themselves to long sets full of service holds.
I’ll back one of the better young players on the Challenger Tour (and about to make his way to the main tour) to keep things close with a big-serving Italian who can hold his own on quicker courts.
