Another day in the elevated conditions of Kitzbuhel, Austria, another over that looks enticing based on the matchup at hand.
Many may not like the term “servebot” in tennis – used to describe a player that has a game almost exclusively based around their serve – but there are plenty of guys out there that really struggle to generate pressure on return, yet possess a dynamic serve. Usually, these players are hard-court experts, but Jarry is one of the few that encapsulates that term, yet plays almost all his matches on the red clay.
Factor in the much thinner air, making that already-big serve even more potent, and you’ve got a recipe for plenty of overs. We saw it play out that way last week in Gstaad, Switzerland, and there’s no reason to doubt it continues in even more elevated conditions this week.
Martinez is no slouch on return, but he’s also not one of the elite returners on tour, capable of dealing with the pace behind Jarry’s serve enough to not only get the ball back in play but also avoid giving the Chilean an easy follow-up forehand.
Consider that last week, Jarry played eight sets in the main draw in Switzerland. Seven of them went to a tiebreak. All three of his matches cleared the 22.5 games total with ease. Yet as we move into even more favourable conditions for his serve, the bookmakers and markets have yet to move that number to 23.5 games.
