Then men’s articles get off to a good start for the week, as Aslan Karatsev is able to take down Alex de Minaur as the underdog.
For Tuesday’s piece, let’s take a look at the match between Jan-Lennard Struff and Pedro Cachin.
In this article:
May 2nd, 16:00 (UK Time)
This match has the ability to be one of the more under-the-radar fun contests of the day in Madrid.
With much bigger names on the schedule, it may not draw in the eyeballs of the Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexander Zverev match, but between Struff’s big hitting, strong serving and tendency to mix in the serve-and-volley tactic, and Cachin’s clay-court prowess, ability to move the ball around the court and strong form entering this tilt, we should see some fun tennis.
While I would say this is a stylistic contrast, I also believe that Cachin benefits here from Struff’s somewhat lacklustre return game and the altitude, to the point that the Argentine’s decent serve should be able to find him rather consistent holds of serve.
With Cachin’s dominant starts in each of his prior matches in the Spanish capital and his success at a different venue, but still in the elevated conditions of Madrid at a Challenger the other week, it’s clear that he likes the conditions here as well.
While I do believe that Struff has a case to make with his big serve, powerful groundstrokes and the rare conditions where clay-court tennis could actually be conducive to serve-and-volley tennis, I can’t justify him being a clear favourite in this matchup.
Cachin’s form is pretty strong at the moment, he’s the more natural clay courter and plays the more consistent brand of tennis of the two. He’s also the better mover and slides more naturally on the clay in this one.
With an implied probability of 40%, I’m happy to back Cachin here. I also don’t mind a look at the over 2.5 sets market or the games total to go over as well.
Odds as at 3:30 am on April 27th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
