After Friday saw a tough close third-set loss with Mikael Ymer, we get one that goes our way in a similar situation on Monday as Ymer once again lost a tight third set. I’ll gladly take another jittery finish from the Swede when we’re opposing him!
For Tuesday, it’s the event in Tel Aviv, Israel that has our featured matchup. It’s a contest between Emil Ruusuvuori and J.J. Wolf where we’ll find our wager. If you’re a fan of big hitting and aggressive tennis, this might be a match worth tuning into.

The match between these two in Cincinnati was an excellent showcase into Wolf’s abilities, but also the areas in which he can still improve. After a slow start with plenty of errors, Wolf was on the verge of being double a double break, before a scintillating patch of play that saw him roar back to lead 6-5 and have a chance to serve for the set. After blowing that game, Wolf completely lost the plot and was dispatched with rather ease in the second set.
It feels like there is very little middle ground with the young American, as he’s either playing in a fashion that can push and/or beat anyone out there, or simply too erratic to win at even the Challenger Tour level.
Fortunately for him, Ruusuvuori can also struggle for stretches, and with his aggressive and flat game style, can run into spells of hitting unforced errors.
With both these guys possessing similar styles and a preference for quicker courts, there isn’t really much of an advantage to be had from either. Ruusuvuori is probably a bit more polished and thus a deserving favourite. The question is how much of a favourite the Finn should be.
For me, that more polished game and ability to avoid unforced errors as often as Wolf makes Ruusuvuori close to a 55-45 kind of favourite.
With the prices currently giving Wolf just a 37% chance of winning, I believe there is some value in backing him to pull off the upset. If he can avoid another meltdown as he had from 6-7, 2-2 in their last encounter, he is in with a chance and at 2.70 odds, I’m happy to get involved.
Odds as at 09:00 am on September 27th, 2022. Odds may now differ.
