A nice win for Stan Wawrinka after dropping the opening set in a tiebreak against Pedro Cachin. The ability to hit through the slow conditions was evident in that match, and his easy power helped us cash a nice big bet.

For Tuesday’s preview, let’s head back to the IEB+ Argentina Open on the ATP Tour. It’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Juan Pablo Varillas from the Argentine capital.

Can’t agree with Varillas being a fairly clear underdog in this match. Slow conditions will help Ugo Carabelli, whose underpowered game relies on waiting out errors and prolonging points, but overall, Varillas is the more talented player and still a clay court natural himself.

I’ll go ahead and back him to pull off the “upset”.

Read on for more expert insights.

Camilo Ugo Carabelli Recent Form

It’s been a great start to the year for the 24-year-old, who is currently on a seven-match winning streak, dating back to his title run in Piracicaba, Brazil at the Challenger level.

He also qualified for the main draw here, though he was close to defeat against Hugo Dellien in the second qualifying round.

He has added a bit of aggression to his forehand but is still a fairly underpowered player compared to most. That may be okay in Buenos Aires, but against a fellow clay courter with much more power, I don’t think he should be a clear favourite.

Juan Pablo Varillas Recent Form

Varillas just got back to playing on clay after the hard-court run to open the season down under.

His lone match on the dirt saw him take the opening set from Yannick Hanfmann last week, before losing the match in a deciding set.

That was a different task though, with Hanfmann hitting a much bigger ball and having a much bigger serve as well, which was even tougher to return in the slight elevation in Cordoba.

With the luxury of having more time, the more aggressive Varillas should be able to control the match and earn his first win of the new season.

Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Juan Pablo Varillas H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have split the two meetings they’ve had before, with both guys winning in three sets. The two prior matches were both also played on clay.

Should be a good battle of duelling styles.
