Wednesday Tennis Best Bet: ATP Washington, Reilly Opelka vs Denis Kudla
Reilly Opelka vs Denis Kudla Best Bet: Wednesday, August 3rd
For our men’s selection from Wednesday’s action in Washington and Los Cabos, we’ll be focusing on the 500-level event in the American capital, where the crowds are sure to be on hand supporting both of their compatriots – with from the area, however, I’d imagine he’ll see a bit more of that support.
As is normally the case with matches involving Reilly Opelka, this one should be a serve-oriented affair.

Reilly Opelka vs Denis Kudla Preview
August 3rd, 21:30 UK Time
Back on the hard courts for the first time since March, Opelka is surely ready to put tough clay and grass seasons behind him (he had some success on the quicker dirt in Houston and in the altitude of Geneva, but outside of that, it’s been a rough few months).
With three semifinals to his name so far in 2022 on hard courts and the Washington courts playing decently-quick, Opelka should be able to lean on his serve and comfort on the surface to get back on track.
Kudla, however, also enjoys quicker courts and can play an aggressive style of his own. His serve isn’t one of the elite ones on tour, but it’s solid enough to ensure he’ll be able to dictate points in his service games and keep Opelka from getting to neutral in rallies and potentially taking control of points himself.
We’ve also seen Kudla really improve his defensive play and rally tolerance this year (he stunned many avid tennis observers with his play through the Phoenix Challenger and the following week in Miami.
Reilly Opelka vs Denis Kudla Best Bet
With both players likely to rely heavily on holding their serves and looking for the rare opportunity in return games, the over looks a decent bet.
We know there’s a massive gulf between the serving and returning abilities of Opelka. It’s what has led to his propensity to play tiebreaks this season when on hard courts.
Kudla’s also found himself in plenty of prolonged sets, as well as three-set matches. While I’m by no means a trend-oriented bettor, sometimes there’s a reason for the trends. With Kudla, when he’s on, his flat hitting takes away time from his opposition and his defensive ability can coax errors from them as well.
Yet that flat hitting also means he doesn’t have the most margin for error on a lot of his shots. When your shots have less net clearance than most, you’re going to run into stretches where many balls are netted and points lost. His style lends itself to longer matches.
