Brazil, Brazil Serie A, Sunday, August 18th, 20:00 (UK)
The Brasileirão fixtures are coming thick and fast which means our South American expert, Nathan Joyes, returns to provide his Atletico GO vs Internacional prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
Both teams head into this fixture with unwanted records, although Internacional’s recent form offers hope they can soon return to winning ways. Atletico GO, on the other hand, have struggled massively since their promotion, and with just 12 points from 22 matches, they look destined to drop back into Serie B.
Internacional are in a false position in the table due to dealing with their re-location as well as losing key players due to the flooding that hit their stadium and training ground.
However, they currently have three to five matches in hand over most teams in the league, and a couple of positive results could propel them into the top ten.
At the time of writing, before facing Juventude, they haven’t won in 12. However, they are allowed some grace for their adjustment period away from their usual surroundings. And in recent weeks, draws vs Bahia, Palmeiras and Athletico PR suggest they are moving in the right direction.
Atletico GO have seriously struggled since their promotion. Winless in 15, they have zero excuses as to why they’ve not bagged a win since June.Botafogo hammered them 4-1 in their own backyard, whereas Inter only fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away from home to the league leaders.
On the surface, both of these teams look unbackable, but Inter are edging towards a victory, whereas Atletico GO look destined for the drop with just 12 points from 22 matches.
Rafael Borre didn’t have the best Copa America but returned to Brazil and rescued his team a valuable point away to Bahia at the end of July. The Colombian was suspended for the match against Athletico PR, and it will be interesting to see if he starts vs Juventude midweek.
However, with Enner Valencia struggling to get back to his usual self post long term injury, Borre is likely to be trusted to lead the line at the weekend.
The former River Plate forward may have struggled in the Bundesliga, but a return to calmer waters has suited him much better. Against the worst defence in the league, Inter’s agile striker will be a constant threat inside the box.
Better yet, Borre is Inter’s dedicated penalty taker, and with Alan Patrick currently injured, there’s no doubt the former Frankfurt striker will step up from 12 yards if required.
Borre also scored in the reverse leg, so here’s hoping he can repeat that on Sunday evening.
For those who are feeling slightly braver, there’s slightly more juice in Inter’s price to win either half. And as this has landed in three of their last four matches, it will be a rare tracked selection from myself.
Inter beat Palmeiras in the first half before eventually drawing 1-1, but they showed fight to come back and salvage draws against Bahia and Rosario in recent weeks.
The fact Inter fall behind and are now able to thrust themselves back into the match is a promising sign as they look to climb the table. If they are to secure that elusive win, it must come against the worst team in Brazil’s top flight.
Don’t be fooled by their previous 1-1 draw earlier in the campaign. Inter dominated the match finishing with an xG of 2.28 compared to Atletico GO’s 0.36. They are already running out of steam, and the visitors will look to pick them off at any given opportunity.
Atletico GO vs Internacional Prediction odds via bet365 as at 10:00, August 13th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Internacional head into this fixture without their captain Alan Patrick, who has missed the last three matches. However, they have recently welcomed back forward Enner Valencia after a long term injury.
All eyes are on Gabriel Carvalho (16), who has continued to impress in his first few senior appearances, attracting attention from Arsenal.
Atletico GO are struggling for options up front, and their forward Derek has only scored once in 12 league appearances to date. Where goals will come from are a major concern for the recently promoted side.
