Auxerre vs Montpellier prediction preview with time starting to run out for the Ligue 1 cellar dwellers. Montpellier’s own fans may well have sabotaged their season after their most recent match vs St Etienne was suspended just after half time. They are now eight points adrift of safety and face an Auxerre side who are comfortably in midtable. French expert Steve Wyss previews the game.
France, Ligue 1, Sunday, March 30th, 16:15 (UK)
Montpellier look doomed. They really had to win their most recent match which was a home fixture vs St Etienne but things went badly wrong. They found themselves 0-2 down against ten men and the fans lost control, forcing an abandonment. They will likely now lose that game by default and face several punishments. The south coast side are 8 points adrift of safety and now officially lost 6 straight games on the field, which is effectively 7 if we include last week. MHSC have only scored one goal in this period so look very opposable here.
They travel to an Auxerre side who have been very strong upon their promotion. Manager Christophe Pellisier has led them to what will likely be a comfortable midtable spot and they already have 32 points on the board. Auxerre have only lost twice at home all season so can be confident in front of their own fans. They are well coached and capable of keeping things in addition to launching devastating counter-attacks. Montpellier will probably shoot themselves in the foot by being too wide open, or lose their heads and add to their already glutton of cards obtained this season. Auxerre should win, and win well, so taking the home side on a -0.75 Asian handicap makes a ton of sense.
Auxerre vs Montpellier Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:00, March 27th, 2025. Odds may now differ.
Auxerre defender Clement Akpa should return to the side after serving a suspension in the previous game. The hosts could line up in a 3-4-3 system. Montpellier have the option to bring back midfielder Jordan Ferri in the side after serving his own suspension. Their team selection is more unpredictable because at some stage the manager is surely going to have to make some big changes due to underperforming players.
Auxerre possible starting lineup:
Leon, Mensah, Osho, Jubal, Akpa, Hoever, Traore, Danois, Owusu, Perrin, Bair
Montpellier possible starting lineup:
Lecomte, Sainte-Luce, Sagnan, Kouyate, Sacko, Chotard, Nzingoula, Coulibaly, Savanier, Ferri, Delort
