So how does the Colombian football league work? The format of the Primera A is different to most other leagues around the world. Twenty teams take part in the Categoria A season, who play each other once, plus one game against a local rival. This is called the Torneo Apertura. The top eight sides are then drawn against each other to play a two-legged affair. The winners of each tie then progress to the semi-finals, with the winners of those facing each other in the Final. The winners of this Final are declared Apertura title winners.

After the Apertura, all twenty sides then take part in the Torneo Finalizacion. The same format applies, with the top eight sides after twenty matches entering the knockout phase, with the winners of the Final winning the Finalizacion title.

A separate table is kept for relegation. Relegation from the Categoria Primera A is based on an averaging system. The two sides with the worst record on average over the previous three seasons suffer demotion to Primera B.
