Here’s how the Russian Premier League works. There are 16 teams who take part in the Russian Premier League season. The team that finishes the season with the most points is crowned Russian Premier League champions and awarded a spot in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage. The runners up are given a place in the Champions League qualifying round, with the third and fourth placed sides given places in the Europa League qualifying stages.
There are four possible relegation spots in the Russian Premier League. The two sides who finish in 15th and 16th positions are automatically relegated to the second tier of Russian football, the Football National League. The two sides who finish in 13th and 14th place take part in a promotion/relegation playoff against thrid and fourth from the FNL. These playoffs are a two legged affair, with the winners of both ties given places in the Premier League, and the losing sides in the FNL.
Spartak Moscow are the most successful Russian Premier League side, with ten titles to their name. Locomotiv Moscow are the current Champions, winning their third title in the 2017/2018 season.
