Beneil Dariush is one of the most well-rounded UFC lightweights on the roster right now. He has four knockouts, eight submissions, and six decision wins on his resume. Losing, Dariush has been KO’ed three times and submitted once. He puts a four-fight win streak on the line this weekend.
Dariush has a black belt in brazilian jiu-jitsu, and his wrestling is top of the notch. The same can be said about his striking, showcasing how good his boxing has gotten in his last fight, where he put a beating on Drakkar Klose, knocking him out in round two around the one minute mark.
His opponent, Scott ‘Hot Sauce’ Holtzman, rebounded with two consecutive wins after losing a unanimous decision to fellow UFC veteran Nik ‘Carny’ Lentz, in February of 2019. Holtzman has power in his hands and also has a background in wrestling. I feel like both fighters are fairly well-rounded in this matchup, but Dariush is just a level above Holtzman, putting his combinations together better and utilizing his chain-wrestling more effectively. Holtzman is a great fighter, but he has lost everytime he has faced a high caliber of fighter (Lentz, Emmett, Dober). Despite Jim Miller, I can’t tell you who any of the guys he has beaten are, because I’ve never heard of them before. Scott was heavily favoured against Dong Hyun Ma (16-11) and still found himself in trouble in that fight. The guys he has racked up wins over just aren’t that impressive, and with only two legitimate stoppages in ten UFC performances, I don’t exactly consider him a huge threat to Dariush, whose chin is the only thing about him that’s questionable.
All in all, I expect Dariush to go out there and do his thing, getting a few good licks in on top of takedowns. I think Holtzman might even get finished for the first time in his professional career. It’s highly unlikely that he will be able to survive for more than one round on the ground with Dariush, whose 8 submission wins speak for themselves.
