Europa League, Play-offs 1st Leg, Thursday, February 15th, 20:00 (UK)
AC Milan won their sixth consecutive Serie A match at San Siro on Sunday as they beat Napoli by the odd goal.
Since December, the Rossoneri have been flying: they won 10 out of 14 games in all competitions, as only Inter in Serie A has achieved more points (28 against 23) in the last ten matches.
In the same period, Stefano Pioli’s men average 2.5 goals per game and have got Italy’s second-best attack. Only Bologna have more points in front of their home crowd than AC Milan, who have a 13-point cushion on Thiago Motta’s side currently in fifth place.
With such a big advantage in the table the Rossoneri can focus on the Europa League, a trophy that they’ve never won.
AC Milan came third in the Champions League ‘Group of Death’, where they paid for their imprecision in front of the goal.
In fact, despite attempting 95 shots (only four teams have done better), they’ve only scored five times, which made them the worst team for the xG difference (-4.9) in the competition so far.
This is the first time AC Milan and Rennes will face each other in an official European match, and the Milanese’s record against French teams is good: they’ve qualified in four of their last five knockout ties.
The visitors are in excellent form and look much more confident after Julien Stephan replaced Bruno Génésio in the dugout. They’re unbeaten in the last nine games, having won six of them, and have got Ligue 1’s third-best attack.
Les Rouge et Noirs have recently won away at Le Havre (1-0 at the weekend), Lyon, Sochaux, Guingamp and Clermont and can certainly trouble AC Milan, who have only kept one clean sheet in the last six.
In the Europa League, Rennes have always played on the front foot (they’re fifth for attempts) and got three points away in Athens and Haifa.
AC Milan vs Rennes Prediction odds via bet365 as at 06:00, February 12th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Kalulu and Tomori will continue to miss out for AC Milan as both defenders endure recovery from injury. Malick Thiaw is back in full training but wasn’t fit enough to make the bench against Napoli at the weekend – he could feature in a watching brief on Thursday.
Enzo Le Fee, after coming off against Sochaux in the game before, was sidelined for Rennes’ 0-1 victory at the weekend. He’ll prove a big blow here, along with Belocian and Reider who are also ruled out through injury.
AC Milan possible starting lineup:
Maignan; Florenzi, Kjaer, Gabbia, Theo Hernandez; Reijnders, Adli; Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Leao; Jovic
Rennes possible starting lineup:
Mandanda; G. Doué, Omari, Theate, Truffert; Bourigeaud, Matusiwa, Santamaria, D. Doué; Kalimuendo, Terrier.
