Arsenal vs Liverpool predictions are on our agenda on Sunday afternoon in the third round of the FA Cup, overseen by football expert Tom Winch. It’s the standout tie of the round by some distance. Arteta’s men have stumbled in recent weeks, whilst Klopp’s men continued their strong performances.
Both sides will want to win this clash. You’d fancy the winner to go deep in the competition and have a great chance at lifting the trophy. Who will want it more? Only time will tell.
In this article:
England, FA Cup, Sunday, January 7th, 16:30 (UK)
Arsenal have stumbled twice in back-to-back matches in the Premier League, a sour end to 2023. West Ham beat Arteta’s side 2-0 at the Emirates despite the hosts dominating every stat imaginable. Fulham also earned all three points at Craven Cottage in a deserved victory.
We all know that cup matches are never easy to predict, especially with managers looking to give usual starters a rest due to their busy schedules. An added factor is that AFCON and the Asia Cup are just around the corner, and several players from either squad are away with their respective nations.
Liverpool is a relatively big outsider here. They’re priced larger than Arsenal were when they played at Anfield just a couple of weeks ago. Liverpool will certainly have more confidence than the hosts on Sunday evening; although important players are missing, I still believe the visitors are a decent bet on the handicap market.
Klopp’s side have lost just once in the Premier League this term, which came against Spurs was massively unfortunate. The Gunners have been strong in the capital; they’ve won seven of ten, but Liverpool will prove to be a tough test no matter what side the German puts out.
When looking at a betting selection, the H2H doesn’t always have a lot of meaning. In this instance, I think it’s worth noting that there’s a familiar angle – corners – and a lack of them. Not one has managed a double-digit corner count in the last nine meetings between these two in all competitions.
When playing at the Emirates, Arsenal concede very few corners, an average of just 2.50 against in 23/24. Spurs and Man City racked up four a piece here in September and October, respectively, the most of any side this season. Liverpool has taken 3, 6, 2 and 2 corners in their last four visits here.
I don’t expect this game to be as exciting as many may hope; both sides will rotate, which will lead to some players taking a bit of time to get going. With Arsenal losing two consecutive games, they’ll likely become more cautious, leading to fewer chances in attacking areas early on.
Unibet has the corner line set at 10.5, a high line considering recent meetings between the pair. It’s never enjoyable backing a bet that requires a low total. However, I believe there’s some value here.
My final selection for this match comes from the shots market. I’m combining two players to have a shot for the away side. I expect Harvey Elliott to start in midfield for Liverpool, and if he does, I’m confident that he’ll unleash an effort on goal. The 20-year-old has just two Premier League starts in 23/24 but has started in all six Europa League games and each of Liverpool’s three EFL Cup victories.
Elliott has recorded at least one shot in all nine matches outside of the Premier League in which he’s started. The midfielder has racked up an impressive 12 shots in just 240 minutes of football in the EFL Cup. He’s averaged 2.3 shots per 90 in Europe – an impressive stat. He’s one that always wants to impress and isn’t afraid to let one go from range.
What a player Trent Alexander-Arnold is. I think all football fans can agree that he’s much better suited to a midfield role. His range of passing is immense, and he can pick out a player from any angle; he’s dangerous from set pieces in any area of the pitch.
TAA has had at least one shot in ten of his last 12 Premier League appearances. He had one against Arsenal not so long ago and scored the equaliser against Man City. The Liverpool man has had a shot in both substitute appearances in the EFL Cup. His price for a single shot is certainly appealing and one I do not want to turn down.
Mo Salah, Liverpool’s superstar, will not play a part here due to competing in AFCON with Egypt. Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny is also part of the Egyptian squad and will, therefore, miss this FA Cup clash.
Takehiro Tomiyasu and Wataru Endo are both part of Japan’s squad for the Asian Cup, but they’re both absent for this one. Endo has been immense for Liverpool in recent weeks. He’ll be a miss for the visitors.
