When the groups were drawn, this was one of the matches that we all looked forward to, and with good reason. Both of these clubs are heavyweights of the European Game, and they have been embroiled in a war over Robert Lewandowski for most of the summer. There are so many narratives surrounding this game. Bayern have put Barcelona to the sword in recent years, so the Catalans should be gunning for revenge.

The points are also vitally important for both teams. Bayern beat Inter on the opening day, while Barcelona hammered Plzen. The early signs are that it will be these two teams battling it out for top spot in the group, and both will be looking to earn an easier draw in the next round.

Barcelona have conceded 17 goals in their last four meetings with Bayern, so this will be a real test that will assess how well Xavi has managed to turn around the fortunes of the Catalan giants.

Nagelsmann’s Bayern don’t come into this match in the best of form. They started the season in marvellous fashion, but three consecutive draws has seen them displaced at the top of the Bundesliga. They will need to rediscover their form in order to beat a Barcelona side that has looked extremely threatening in recent weeks.

Lewandowski will be relishing the opportunity to score against his old club, especially as the Bavarian backline has looked shaky in their recent matches. All signs are pointing to a football feast on Tuesday night.

Bayern’s last Champions League match away to Inter saw 30 throws, while Barcelona’s match versus Plzen saw 27. Under 35.5 is priced at 1.90 with bet365, but I’ll take a slightly higher line for our builder here.

In Barcelona’s last three matches, their opponents have had eight, 14 and 15 goal kicks. Bayern are much tougher opponents but I think Barcelona will have some success getting at the German backline. I think we will see goals at both ends here. Bayern matches so far this season are averaging 4.33 goals per game, while Barcelona’s are averaging 3.67. The price for both teams to score in the match is very short, but I think both managers will see attack as the best form of defence in this one.

Finally, I’m going to back offsides in this match. Both teams favour playing with a high line, and Nagelsmann’s side in particular look to catch their opponents out with the offside trap. There has been four or more offsides the last four times these teams have met, and there were four and five offsides in these sides’ respective opening group matches.
