Barcelona have netted 41 goals in their opening 11 matches of 2025, their most lethal start to a calendar year since 1943.

The Blaugrana closed the gap on both Madrid clubs in the race for the La Liga crown at the weekend and their attack will make them a formidable foe in the weeks to come.

Flick’s Forward Thinking

Hansi Flick replaced Xavi in the summer and his commitment to attacking football is clear to see. Barcelona have scored an average of  2.78 goals per game in La Liga this season, 0.70 more than they scored per match last season and 0.56 more than Real Madrid, who lead the way in the Spanish top flight. Bayern Munich are the only team in Europe’s top five leagues to score more goals per game than Barca.

Under Flick, Barcelona adopt a high-risk, high-reward approach. The defensive line pushes up the field in order to squeeze their opponents and utilise an offside trap. In fact, they catch their opponents 5.61 times per match on average. This has enabled them to sustain attacks and rack up the most shots in La Liga with an average of 16.7 per game.

Barcelona have recorded some emphatic victories already in 2025. They’ve netted 12 goals across two meetings with Valencia. They have also scored five against Benfica and Real Betis but the 5-2 win over Real Madrid in the final of the Spanish Super Cup is their most impressive result. Flick will be hoping this rich vein of scoring form continues in the months ahead.

An Abundance of Attacking Options

Robert Lewandowski, a man who worked with Flick at Bayern, is back to his brilliant best. The striker has scored 19 goals in La Liga thus far, putting him three goals ahead of Mbappe in the race for the Pichichi. Robert has also scored nine goals in the Champions League, the joint-most in the competition.

Barcelona’s wide players have also filled their boots this season. Raphinha, who look set to be a flop in Spain under Xavi has emerged as one of the deadliest attackers in European football. The Brazilian has scored seven and assisted five in his last nine competitive matches. He has now has 37 goal contributions this campaign, the second most of any player competing in Europe’s top five leagues behind only Mohamed Salah.

Lamine Yamal’s exploits in a Spain shirt last summer earned the Young Player of the Tournament award at Euro 2024. He has continued that form at club level and boasts the most assists in La Liga with 10. Yamal also have five league goals to his name.

Fermin Lopez is also proving to be a useful tool in the Barcelona offensive line. The 21-year-old has five goals and two assists in his last five appearances. He was sent off in the 4-1 win over Sevilla but the strength in depth in forward areas will serve the club well as they aim to secure silverware.

No Signs of Slowing Down

Up next for Barcelona is Rayo Vallecano. Inigo Perez’s team are 6th and are aiming to secure European football but shackling Flick’s attack should prove difficult. The Blaugrana beat Vallecano 2-1 earlier in the season, racking up a total of 22 shots. They will have home advantage this time around so expect them to show even more attacking impetus. Barcelona beat Rayo 3-0 in this fixture last season and look far more deadly this time around.

Barca’s next away game is a trip to Las Palmas. Flick’s side are out for revenge after losing the reverse fixture 2-1. The Blaugrana squandered a wealth of chances in that game, finishing the game with 27 attempts and an xG of 2.30. They will be hoping to show their clinical side here.

Barcelona have scored an average of 3.73 goals per game in 2025 and their attack is showing no signs of slowing down. Their top-eight finish in the Champions League affords the team some much-needed rest so they will likely be firing on all cylinders when they host Rayo Vallecano this week.
