We know, the Premier League season hasn’t even started yet, and we’re delving into who the Player of the Season may be. It feels a bit premature, and that’s because it is. Hugely.
But, by scouring the market now, there’s an opportunity to lock in a wide range of inflated prices. If you’re confident there’s a player or two poised to have an impactful campaign, this could be a market to peer into before the season starts.
And speaking of outright bets for the top-flight, check out bettingexpert’s Ante-Post Premier League Betting Guide by Scott Thornton. You won’t regret it.
In this article:
First, some history. Erling Haaland scooped up this award last season in what you could describe as a satisfactory first campaign in English football and further afield in the Champions League! It continued the dominance in this heat of players from the “Big Six.” With Riyad Mahrez in 2015/16, then of Leicester, the only player since Alan Shearer in 1996/97 not to be voted winner whilst playing for one of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United or Tottenham.
The Norwegian has been installed as the favourite to retain the title, but at best odds of 3.50, I’m looking elsewhere to pick up some value.
If Trent Alexander-Arnold continues his sensational form from last season in his new hybrid role, he could set a record assist total. The Liverpool man directly contributed seven goals in his last ten league appearances. With his side boasting an enviable army of forwards, there are plenty of options to get on the end of his good work.
Declan Rice will get even more exposure following his £105m move from West Ham. Well-liked by his peers who voted for this award, he has plenty of competition among his new teammates. However, we know what Rice can bring to the table, and as the new addition to an Arsenal side that just fell short last term, if they do go one better and claim the title, he could be the catalyst for that.
Finally, Harry Kane has never won this award before, and in what could be his last season on these shores, it would be a fitting send-off for England’s top bagsman. The risk is, of course, he leaves before or midway through the season. Or Tottenham has another season of horribilis which overshadowed his remarkable 30-goal haul in the last campaign.
I feel Trent will deliver some outstanding numbers and therefore is my pick.

Since the turn of the century, 68.2% of the Player of the Year winners were representing the sides to have won the league that season, and this has been the case for the last three seasons. Erling Haaland scooped up the accolade last campaign, Kevin De Bruyne the season before, and Ruben Dias the time before that.
Five of the last 22 winners have been defenders, eight were midfielders, and nine played up top. So, recent history suggests this season’s POTY is more than likely going to win the league, and chances are, they are going to be of a more creative ilk.
And with that in mind, I am touting a defender who plays for a side that is 9.00 to win the top flight.
If the back end of last season is anything to go off, Trent Alexander-Arnold is set for some season. The full-back notched up seven assists and scored in his previous 10 EPL appearances operating in that hybrid role.

Pep Guardiola has re-invented his defence and made them incredibly hard to break down. An instrumental figure in this reinvigoration was John Stones. He was lauded for his incredible calmness on the ball, whilst Stones featured in many pundits’ teams of the season.
The 29-year-old is a firm favourite of Guardiola, with the Spaniard using Stones at centre back, right back, and holding midfield at points last season. With only 33 goals conceded all season, The Citizens had the joint-best defensive record in the league. The signing of Joško Gvardiol will further augment a strong defence.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility for a defender to win the Premier League Player of the Season, as shown by Stones’ centre-back partner Ruben Dias claiming the award in 2021. With City expected to win the league due to their newly reformed defence, I expect the media to continue their admiration for John Stones, so I am happy to back the 67.00 on display to win the POTY.

Erling Haaland will always be a contender for this award while playing at Manchester City. He is a generational goal scorer playing as the focal point of one of the Premier League’s most deadly attacking outfits. His credentials to win the Player of the Year are almost certainly tied with his ability to be the top scorer so we will focus our attention elsewhere for this market.
Bukayo Saka looks like a great value pick for the Player of the Year award. He is integral to Arsenal and should prove to be pivotal to any success they have this season. Saka scored 14 goals and had 11 assists in the league last season, which earned him an average WhoScored rating of 7.40.
Saka got an assist in the Community Shield and will be a frontrunner for this award should Arsenal beat City to the title. His price on bet365 is particularly appealing.

Looking at the odds, it comes as no surprise to see that the 6ft4 Norwegian is at the top of the list; he’s just 3.50 to clinch POTY. His Belgian teammate, Kevin De Bruyne, is priced up at 9.00 as the second favourite, whilst Harry Kane, Mo Salah and Bukayo Saka complete the top five.
The Arsenal man I previously mentioned is who I’m leaning towards; he’s a much higher price than the Man City duo for obvious reasons. Saka scored 14 times in the top flight last season and recorded a further 11 assists; only three players contributed to more goals than the 21-year-old.
Bukayo is a fan favourite; he has little to no haters and is only going to get better and better. The last time an Englishman won this award was back in 2015/2016, that being Jamie Vardy. It’s about time we saw another English player receiving the trophy.
