Is Mauricio Pochettino poised to enter the party? Can Eddie Howe fend off the Blues boss? Will this season be some form of top-four redemption for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool? Let’s see what our team of betting experts think.

But first, before we get started, here’s a 2023/24 Premier League ante-post betting preview from our very own; Scott Thornton.

Jack Wright’s Premier League Top Four Odds and Predictions: A bounce-back to near Pep

I can see Manchester City winning the title by a few more than the five-point margin of last season, but who completes the top four?

I am predicting a “bounce back” campaign from Liverpool. Last season’s fifth place was the lowest finishing position in a full season under Jürgen Klopp, and you could see how much it hurt.

The 56-year-old has seen it before in his time at Anfield. They put up a lame defence of the title when they won with 99 points in 2019/20. That season saw them limp over the line with 69 points, but they responded in 2021/22 by finishing just a point behind Manchester City, who were champions with 93.

There were reasons behind the disappointing showing last term. Firstly, potential tiredness following playing every game of the prior season in pursuit of the quadruple, an ageing, leggy midfield, and many injuries to key players.

It’s so far so good with regard to the squad overhaul, with World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai the eye-catching signings. Expect improved campaigns from last season’s new additions, Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo, assisted by Trent Alexander-Arnold in his new hybrid role.

The Reds will look to pick up where they left off, having gone undefeated in their last 11 league games, winning seven.

Arsenal, who pushed Pep’s men all the way last term, will have the distraction of competing in the Champions League this season. Mikel Arteta will also be desperate to add some silverware to the Emirates trophy cabinet, having failed to do so despite a positive campaign in 2022/23.

The summer transfer business of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurriën Timber will add quality to the squad. But it feels like last season represented a missed opportunity, given the poor showings from several rivals. Another good points tally is expected, though I have them in third.

The race for fourth looks intriguing. I am siding with Manchester United, who had a superb debut campaign under Erik ten Hag—finishing third in the league and reaching both domestic cup finals, winning one.

They, too, are in the Champions League, which could prove a distraction. That’s something Chelsea doesn’t have to contend with. Still, I’ll take the Blues to fall just short in the first season of a rebuild under Mauricio Pochettino.

Jimmy The Punt’s Premier League Top Four Odds and Predictions: The Geordies likely not a one-season Champions League wonder

Since swapping Bavaria for Manchester in the summer of 2016, Pep has never steered City short of a top-four finish, and at 1/16 on, it does not look likely this campaign.

But who is going to occupy the other three spots?

With Rice and Havertz added to their ranks and a Community Shield in the bag, Arsenal should be up there.

According to the bookies, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea are next in line.

With such a bloated squad, getting a read on the latter is difficult. The Blues are closing in on spending £1b since Todd Boehly took charge at Stamford Bridge and are reportedly in talks with Neymar; what a mess.

A number nine is crucial to how Erik ten Hag wants to play, and in Rasmus Højlund, I am not sure they have their man.

Liverpool, I do like it. Jurgen Klopp’s tenure has peaked and troughed, and after the poor campaign last season and a summer rebuild, I expect vast improvements this campaign.

Finally, I think it will be Newcastle. Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, and Tino Livramento have added depth and quality to their squad.

Matthew O’Reagan’s Premier League Top Four Odds and Predictions: Steady progress in the North West

An EFL Cup win, and a third-place finish demonstrated a healthy start as manager of Manchester United for Erik Ten Hag. While I still feel they have some progress to make in order to catch their cross-city rivals, Manchester United fans will be pleased with the progress.

In the off-season, the squad has improved. David De Gea has moved on, with his on-the-ball ability falling short of what Ten Hag wants in a goalkeeper. Andre Onana arrives from Inter Milan. The Cameroon international is an exceptional sweeper-keeper and will give United greater scope to control possession in games. The hard-working Mason Mounts arrives controversially from Chelsea and will augment an already strong midfield containing tough-tackling Casemiro and creative lynchpin Bruno Fernandes.

The striker position has been an area of concern for the Red Devils for a couple of seasons, and it is hoped that young striker Rasmus Højlund is the solution.
Manchester United looks in better shape than last season, so I expect them to finish in the top four again.

Scott Thornton’s Premier League Top Four Odds and Predictions: Reclaiming a seat at the table

Manchester City and Arsenal were the only sides that easily wrapped up their Champions League spot last season. Manchester United and Newcastle United were under pressure after Liverpool rallied late on, but they were able to hold onto their positions.

Liverpool look set to be much improved this campaign. Klopp has significantly strengthened his midfield, and they should be a real force in attack. There are still question marks about their defensive solidity, but Liverpool will fancy their chances of breaking back into that top four.

Manchester United and Newcastle United also appeared to have made progress in the summer. Erik Ten Hag has strengthened his squad and appears to have more players that are capable of carrying out his instructions. Eddie Howe has added quality to his team as they look to contend with the added pressure of Champions League football.

Just who will drop out of the top four is unclear. Still, I expect Liverpool to reclaim their place.

Tom Winch’s Premier League Top Four Odds and Predictions: A surprise for some

Man City – I don’t think there’s any explanation needed here; it’ll be the shock of the season if Pep’s side doesn’t finish inside the top four. They’ve got a quality wherever you look. The odds of (1.05) speak for themselves.

At the Emirates, Mikel Arteta has worked wonders at Arsenal; it’s taken less time than expected, with very few football fans expecting them to do as well as last season. The addition of Declan Rice is huge; his quality in the centre of the park will push the club to another level. Timber has proven to be a smart signing so far.

It’s a young squad; another year of playing together should only see them move in one direction. Saka, Jesus, Martinelli and Trossard complement each other extremely well in what is an entertaining side to watch. They’re most comfortably a top-four side; therefore, I’m confident that we will see them finish just as high as we did in the previous campaign.

Liverpool – It’s safe to say that Liverpool’s season went horribly wrong in 2022/23; they lacked intensity, consistency and game management from the opening day. Their midfield injuries, of course, didn’t help the cause, but that’s no excuse. I expect a considerable uplift in performance and results in the upcoming campaign.

Midfield additions were the most important part of Liverpool’s summer. Henderson, Milner and Fabinho have all departed. Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are impressive pieces of recruitment, but they still need more, and at the time of writing, there have been no other completed pieces of business.

The attack is arguably the strongest in the division; Salah, Gakpo, Jota, Diaz, and Nunez can all cause mayhem on their day. This team should score plenty, and that’s what should push them into a Champions League spot.

Chelsea – This selection is a surprise selection, but I’m expecting good things from Poch and Chelsea. Firstly, they have no European football to worry about, so the sole focus will be on the league. There’s still expected to be a number of new recruits added to the squad, which should make them an even stronger outfit.

If Poch can get his side playing how he wants them to, then this season will be an exciting one. They’ve made a number of good signings in all areas of the pitch. There are lots of youngsters within this squad, something that the Argentinian boss will thrive in, as he did at Spurs. I may be a little optimistic about their league finish, but I think they’ve got a decent chance of putting down a marker.
