RB Leipzig vs Celtic Preview
Wednesday, October 5th, 17:45 (UK)
RB Leipzig make a return to the scene of their MD1 shock defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk. That 4-1 hammering is one of only two losses in their last 13 European ties at Red Bull Arena. That result also represented Domenico Tedesco’s final match in charge. Marco Rose was soon appointed as his successor and the German head coach savoured a 3-0 win over former employers Dortmund in his opening game. A 2-0 reverse at UCL holders Real Madrid followed to leave his side pointless going into this crucial clash with Celtic. Scoring seven unanswered league goals in two victories here should provide a timely confidence boost.
The job Ange Postecoglou has done at the Scottish champions has led to English Premier League clubs casting admiring glances in his direction. Whether that interest was a factor in a run of three games without a win or just coincidence is up for debate. But that sequence was ended via a much-needed victory over Motherwell at the weekend. A win which at least saw them consolidate their two-point cushion at the top of their domestic league.
RB Leipzig vs Celtic Best Bet
Christopher Nkunku scored a brace in the 4-0 defeat of Bochum at the weekend. Ending a mini drought for the much-coveted striker. The France international burst onto the scene last season hitting 20 Bundesliga goals in just 34 appearances. Also scoring 11 times in 12 games across two European competitions. Expect a difficult night for Celtic who have never won on German soil in 13 attempts. I’m backing the 24-year-old to be at the heart of that by getting on the scoresheet.
- Selection: Christopher Nkunku to score (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.50 (Paddy Power)
- Stakes: 6/10

Benfica vs PSG Preview
Wednesday, October 5th, 20:00 (UK)
Something has to give at Estadio da Luz. Both teams bring their 100% Group H records to battle in Lisbon. Having dropped their first points of an excellent domestic campaign at the weekend. The Eagles will hope history doesn’t quickly repeat itself in European competition. Roger Schmidt insisted he was not worried about his side’s 0-0 stalemate at Vitória de Guimarães. A result that ended eight successive league wins.
The Parisians too have dropped just two points in Ligue 1. Their latest of eight victories came against Nice on Saturday. It’s hard to think a team like Christophe Galtier’s men could need a confidence boost. But if they did, the come-from-behind win at Maccabi Haifa on MD2 would have been just that. Ending a run of five away games without a win in this competition. PSG are on a run of ten UCL away games without a clean sheet. So to claim all three points here the visitors are likely to have to strike at least twice.
Benfica vs PSG Best Bet
The French champions looked to actually be limping towards a draw at the weekend. Until Galtier utilised the luxury of bringing Kylian Mbappe off the bench. With the substitute duly obliging with the winning goal eight minutes from time. That was the 23-year-olds eighth goal in as many Ligue 1 appearances this season. Also scoring in both fixtures in this competition including a first half brace against Juventus.
With his partners in crime Lionel Messi and Neymar also in sparkling form this could be a historic night for the French international. Another goal here, would see him surpass Edinson Cavani as PSG’s highest scorer in European history. I am taking him to do just that.
- Selection: Kylian Mbappe to score (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.20 (bet365)
- Stakes: 7/10
Sevilla vs Dortmund Preview
UEFA, Champions League, Wednesday, October 5th, 20:00 (UK)
It seems beleaguered Julen Lopetegui’s days in charge of Sevilla are numbered. Following the weekend home defeat to Atletico Madrid, his side sit precariously just one point above the La Liga drop zone. One win and five points from their opening seven fixtures is a nightmare start to the campaign. Especially considering Los Nervionenses have finished 4th in each of the last three seasons. Sevilla were beaten 4-0 at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán by Manchester City on MD1 of this season’s UCL. Following a dour 0-0 in Copenhagen, they have now failed to score in each of their last three games in the competition.
Dortmund once again threw away a lead at the weekend. Conceding three second half goals to Cologne in slipping to a 3-2 defeat. Although their third loss in the league this term they are still only two points behind leaders Union Berlin. Level on points with Bayern with Der Klassiker to look forward to this weekend.
Despite now losing three successive away games the loss in this competition on MD2 was harsh. Leading Manchester City by the only goal of the game as the clock ticked to 80 minutes. Four minutes later Die Schwarzgelben had snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. John Stones equalised from outside the box into the top right corner. Erling Haaland grabbed the winner by finishing off an audacious outside-of-the-boot Joao Cancelo cross with an acrobatic volley.
Sevilla vs Dortmund Best Bet
Dortmund remain in pole position to grab the runners-up spot in Group G. Their comfortable 3-0 defeat of Copenhagen means they travel to Spain in second place. Although the run of losses away from home will be of concern the German side look in better shape than the hosts. An early goal will certainly turn the unimpressed home supporters against their team.
One player who can exploit that is Jude Bellingham. The teenager has scored in both of his UCL appearances this campaign. He has fired off 23 shots in his 10 games for his club across both league and European competitions. Nine of those have hit the target. The England international has had at least one shot on target in eight of his 10 outings for BVB. Odds against him having another in this tie looks very big value and warrants a maximum bet.
- Selection: Jude Bellingham (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.50 (bet365)
- Stakes: 10/10
