Club Brugge vs Benfica Preview

Club Brugge were one of the standout performers in the Champions League group stage. They finished runners-up in a tricky group with Porto, Leverkusen and Atletico but the Belgian side stood firm and held their own. They’ve struggled massively since then with just a single win across 10 league games, they were knocked out of the cup very convincingly.

Only Napoli and Bayern scored more than Benfica, who topped Group H by the skin of their teeth. They did the double over Juventus and Israeli side, Haifa, and registered two 1-1 draws with PSG. The Portuguese club are having a terrific season domestically, they’re top of the league and boast the best goal difference.

Roger Schmidt’s side are considerable favourites to overcome the stuttering Brugge side, they’re odds on to win at the Jan Breydel Stadion which is fair but a little short for me. There is one player I’m keen to get onside with though. Joao Mario is having the season of his life, he’s scored the most goals in Portugal and bagged in four separate matches in the groups.

The 30-year-old has had 20 shots on target in 19 top-flight appearances this season, averaging 1.2 per 90 with four in six games in the Champions League. Since his return from the winter break, Joao Mario has registered a shot on target in five of his seven league outings.

He’ll most likely be the penalty taker for his club which is always an added bonus. Benfica will fancy themselves here given the poor from Brugge are on but I’m happy to back the man on form rather than his side on Wednesday night.

Dortmund vs Chelsea Preview

Dortmund have returned to the Bundesliga in style, they’ve won all five matches since the restart which has seen them climb into 3rd. Edin Terzic’s side have been scoring plenty but do concede chances at the other end.

The goals are often shared in the Dortmund side, 14 different scorers have combined for a total of 40 goals, Jude Bellingham scored four of their 10 in the group stages which saw them finish in 2nd spot behind Manchester City.

You’d think it’ll be only a matter of time before Graham Potter’s side clicks, we all know about their spending in recent times but they’ve looked like a bunch of individuals rather than a team. The English side are strong favourites to manoeuvre themselves into the next round but at this current time, it’s not worth the risk.

Only Manchester City have prevented Dortmund from scoring this season at Signal Iduna Park, they’ve scored nine times in just two games here since the return and I fancy them to find the back of the net once again.

The quality is most definitely visible looking at that Chelsea side, especially in attacking areas. Joao Felix opened up his account at the weekend which will give him a massive boost of confidence. Noni Madueke has looked lively at times whilst Mudryk has enjoyed playing in this competition, the Ukrainian scored three times in the group stages.

BTTS is priced around 1.70 with many bookmakers which is reasonable enough given the fixture, I’m also keen to get onside with a card angle as with Mr Manzano holding the whistle.

The referee has booked each side in all 17 matches he’s officiated this season across Spain and the Champions League. All six of Chelsea’s group stage matches saw both sides booked whereas Dortmund saw this angle land in five of their clashes.
