The Champions League quarter-final draw has taken place in Switzerland. Eight teams have learned their opponents including all three of the English teams remaining in the competition.
The Round of 16 brought about a fair few surprises. The biggest of the lot saw the Spanish side and Europa League holders Villarreal dump out Juventus over two legs. That 3-0 win in Italy was the result of the round.
Another lesser surprise was Real Madrid’s triumph over Paris Saint-Germain. Los Blancos were 2-0 down on aggregate with 30 minutes left in the tie. A 17-minute hat-trick from Karim Benzema sent Carlo Ancelotti’s side through.
Tournament favourites Manchester City breezed past Sporting CP after a 5-0 win in the first leg. Challengers Bayern Munich drew their first leg 1-1 but eventually went through 8-2 on aggregate.

Liverpool struggled past Inter Milan while Atletico Madrid ended Manchester United’s chances over two legs. Chelsea made it three English teams in the last eight after that two-legged victory over Lille.
Another big surprise occurred in the Netherlands this week. Benfica beat Ajax 1-0 to make it 3-2 on aggregate and secure their passage into the last eight for the first time since 2015-16.
There are three English teams in the quarter-final pot for the second successive season. There are also three teams from Spain and none of them are FC Barcelona. It’s the first time La Liga has sent three teams this far in the competition since the 2017-18 season.
It’s also the second successive season in which neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo will play in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Each of these eight teams are now just four matches away from the showpiece final in Paris. Here is the draw in full:
The matches will be played between April 5th and 13th. Here is the draw in full:
Chelsea were the first team out of the pot and were pitted against Real Madrid. The two sides were drawn alongside one another last season. The Blues triumphed over two legs in the semi-finals on their way to the title.
Manchester City will play host to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of this match. The two teams have never met before in a European competition.
Villarreal have the difficult task of facing Bayern Munich in the quarters. These sides met in the Champions League group stage back in the 2011-12 season. Bayern won both ties and will expect to triumph here.
Benfica host Liverpool in the first leg ahead of the return leg at Anfield. These two European giants have met countless times down the years. The most recent was in the Europa League back in April 2010 as the Reds triumphed on aggregate. They haven’t met in the European Cup since 1984.
The draw for the semi-final has also taken place. These matches will take place between April 26th and May 4th.
This could be an all-English semi-final with Manchester City the favourites to get past Atletico Madrid. Chelsea beat Real Madrid last season so it could see two Premier League sides in the semis.
There are two big favourites heading into these two quarters. Liverpool and Bayern should get through to set up an intriguing match.
