League One, Ligue 1, and Serie A take centre stage in the newest edition of Early Bird best bets. If you’re new to proceedings, the goal here is to locate any early value ahead of the crowds. The three picks below should be, in theory, shorter in price come next weekend.
In this article:
England, League One, Saturday, October 22nd, 15:00 (UK)
MK Dons continue to struggle through League One matches this season. Plymouth Argyle’s visit unearthed a number of inefficiencies in the home dressing room. Most notably, the lacking capabilities of building play from the back.
Finn Azaz leached onto two mistakes borne from an Argyle press following the hosts playing out from the goalkeeper. The travelling Green Army were sent into raptures on four separate occasions as MK Dons were overpowered for the fourth match in a row, and the ninth outing in 13 league fixtures.
The Dons’ opponents, Wycombe, have admittedly experienced a slow start to the campaign. However, with a commanding 3-1 victory over Peterborough following an Oxford scalp on the road, Wanderers head to Stadium MK in good shape.
The Asian handicap has shifted from around evens for Wycombe +0.25 to 0.0, but that still represents a handy price. Wycombe should pose a difficult task given MK Dons’ struggles, and one would expect that price to continue to shorten ahead of next weekend.
Italy, Serie A, Sunday, October 23rd, 11:30 (UK)
Over to Italy now for a change in style and setting, but with another Asian Handicap to deliberate. The -0.25 in Udinese’s favour is an interesting pick, given the form of a Torino outfit reeling from five wins from seven. Crosstown rivals, Juventus, have left a bitter taste to the tune of 0-1 this weekend, making their slump ten times worse for locals.
For Udinese, it has been a dream beginning to Serie A with ten games on the board. Five points off a Napoli team in first who only just pip Udinese as the ‘most improved’ so far – a welcome change in fortunes after a twelfth-placed finish and a poor run at the back end of last season.
A 0-0 in Rome came from Lazio’s crunch match with Udinese in Serie A’s most-recent footballing schedule. It was an even affair for two teams neck and neck in the standings, suggesting a pairing at a similar level form-wise. Pre-Lazio, Udinese’s ability to grind out results came to the fore versus Atalanta. Approaching the latter stages and 0-2 down, a double salvo from Gerard Deulofeu and Nehuén Pérez ensured it was a point gained.
Six wins on the bounce laid the foundation for the two draws in recent weeks. The one loss against AC Milan in the season opener highlights precisely how impressive Udinese have been, swatting the likes of Inter, Sassuolo, and Roma (4-0) to the curb.
With the security of losing half the stake in the event of a draw, the Udinese handicap looks like a strong position this weekend.
France, Ligue 1, Sunday, October 23rd, 14:00 (UK)
In Troyes and Lorient, two sides enter match day twelve with 19 goals apiece. At the other end, the 17.5xGA for Troyes and the 17.1xGA in Lorient colours don’t provide two of the sturdiest defensive units in the division. Lorient are flying high in France’s leading division, though the 14.55 shots conceded per90 is a sign that they’ve had to roll with the punches to find themselves only two points shy of PSG.
When entering the BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals market, two sides that regularly ship goals at the wrong end but have enough invention to cause issues in attacking areas is the mould of a winning component needed in said market. Well, in France on Sunday, that’s what we’ve got.
Both sides rank in the top two for the most profitable teams in BTTS and Over 2.5 Goals for punters. Seven of Troyes’ 11 matches have banked in this market – a total only beaten by two teams. Lorient and Lille rank joint-first with 8/11 matches returning profits in the goal-laden market.
So, on paper, these two meet on Sunday and both find the net, with a shed-load of chances materialising for onlooking supporters. Of course, it’s never that easy, but at 2.05 with the data to back it up, a goals wager in France is worth a shot.
