Domestic cup action returns to centre stage this week. Six of the ties that were unable to find a winner the first time of asking replay on Tuesday. That includes two National League outfits aiming to cause upsets and an all-Championship clash. I have picked out my three FA Cup best bets from those.

Following a 1-1 draw at Meadow Park at the beginning of the month, these two sides meet again in Lancashire to earn the right to host Cardiff or Leeds in Round Four. John Coleman’s side were denied that honour by a 78th-minute Lindokuhle Ndlovu equaliser in the initial tie after they had taken a sixth-minute lead.
The ‘Owd Reds have had two positive results since these sides last met. Defeating Lincoln on penalties to progress to the semi-finals of the EFL Trophy. Saturday’s impressive 2-0 victory over high-flying Bristol Rovers means they welcome their National League opponents with good heart.
Since earning a replay in the original tie, Luke Garrard’s side have made it three consecutive 1-1 draws with a credible point at league leaders Notts County. The Wood didn’t have a fixture at the weekend so will travel to The Wham Stadium with the extra rest advantage over their hosts.
Boreham Wood caused a shock in the last round of this competition with a 2-0 win away at Bristol Rovers. That was in fact their only win in their last eight league and cup games. But despite currently occupying 19th place in League One just a point above the drop zone I am siding with the hosts here. Stanley are operating two levels above their visitors and are a solid outfit in the English third tier. They finished 12th last term in a league where they have been a fixture since 2018. This is likely to be another tight clash but at odds of 2.00 Accrington look a shade of value.

Red-hot Joel Piroe’s goal was not enough to secure the Swans’ passage through to the fourth round. Antoine Semenyo’s 75th-minute leveller means the two sides must do battle again in Wales.
Russell Martin bemoaned his side’s lack of ruthlessness and energy to finish off their Championship rivals and secure a match against either Chesterfield or West Brom. He will, however, have been delighted with the immediate response to that. His side reignited their play-off hopes back in league action on Saturday. Piroe once again on the scoresheet with the opening goal in a 3-1 defeat of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Having been under pressure Nigel Pearson has now seen his side put a four-game unbeaten run together. With creditable draws against Millwall and Coventry preceding the original tie with Swansea the Robins registered a morale-boosting 4-2 victory over Birmingham at the weekend.
Joël Piroe looks to have recaptured the form that made him such a hot property last season. The Dutchman plundered 23 goals last term and ended the campaign in scintillating form. He demonstrated he was very much a “streak” performer and is certainly running hot currently. That strike at the weekend was his 10th in 25 appearances but half of those have come in his last six outings. Piroe will fancy his chances against a side that have kept just two clean sheets on the road this season. Especially having got on the scoresheet in the Swans’ 3-1 win here in the league back in October.

England, FA Cup, Tuesday, January 17th, 20:00 (UK)
If this clash at the Hawthorns comes close to the barnstorming encounter served up in Chesterfield we will be in for a treat. Just about everything that makes the FA Cup special was there in abundance at the Technique Stadium. Just 90 seconds were on the clock when Brandon Thomas-Asante opened the scoring. But despite taking the lead twice the Baggies found themselves trailing at the interval by the odd goal in five. Just as Carlos Corberan’s in-form side looked to be crashing out of the cup Thomas-Asante grabbed an injury-time leveller.
Despite currently operating three tiers below West Brom, Paul Cook’s side were arguably the better side in the original tie. Armando Dobra bagged a brace and in doing so maintained his record of scoring in each of the four rounds Chesterfield have featured in so far. With the visitors not having had a fixture since the first meeting they will travel with optimism high in taking a Championship scalp in their own backyard. West Brom in contrast had to come from two goals down to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory away to Luton Town.
Despite being his side’s last-gasp hero at Chesterfield Brandon Thomas-Asante will not be featuring in this replay. The FA reviewed his 92nd-minute clash with Jeff King and suspended the striker for three matches. The first of which being the weekend trip to Luton.
His replacement at Kenilworth Road was Daryl Dike. The American international sparked his side’s comeback with their first goal just before halftime. That strike was his second in his last two starts and third in ten appearances this season. A 20-game injury layoff has limited the 22-year-old to a total of just 402 minutes this season. Therefore his record of a goal every 134 minutes is a very respectable return.
With Corberan overseeing nine wins from his 12 games in charge, it is expected his side will overcome their National League opponents at the second time of asking. Dike looks their best route to claiming that fixture at Bristol City or Swansea.
