Europa League, Play-offs 1st Leg, Thursday, February 15th, 17:45 (UK)
Roma played with great intensity and courage against Serie A leaders Inter and took a deserved lead after 45 minutes. It was nothing like the recent performances under Josè Mourinho, with the Giallorossi pressing high and creating more than a problem for Italy’s best defence. Credit to Daniele De Rossi for sticking to his principles; unfortunately for the new manager, as soon as the rhythm dropped, Inter’s superior quality emerged, and Roma’s two star players, Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku, had a night to forget.
The team’s balance might need some fine-tuning, but the direction of travel is the right one: with De Rossi in charge, Roma have scored ten times in four league games, whereas in the last four matches (excluding the 2-1 win against Serie B side Cremonese in Coppa Italia) of Mou’s reign they only scored twice.
Now Roma are called to show the same brand of football in Europe where their away form has been very patchy: they’ve only won one (against Sheriff Tiraspol) of their last eight games. Last year’s Europa League finalist built their success on very cagey away performances. All their four away knockout games produced less than 1.5 goals.
Roma finished second in a relatively easy group, and their attacking numbers have been poor: only five players have scored (Andrea Bellotti, who netted three times, has moved to Fiorentina), as the Giallorossi are 29th for number of attacks and 17th for shots on target (27) in the competition.
The Dutch side are unbeaten in nine matches, but threw away the Champions League qualification by losing the last three games. Perhaps they lacked experience in the big matches but showed they can certainly score: in fact, they’ve found the net in five out of six European games with seven different players.
They’re firmly second in the Dutch league, unbeaten in the last seven at the De Kuip, where they’ve also kept four consecutive clean sheets.
