The Europa League is nearing its climax as we round off the semi-finals on Thursday night. We look ahead to West Ham’s game in Germany, where they find themselves 2-1 down with a lot to do.
Moyes’ side have picked up some memorable wins so far in the competition and they will be looking to take inspiration from what they have already achieved to progress to the final here. The Hammers were probably the better side in the first leg, they responded superbly to going behind in the very first minute but they fell behind again early in the second half and were unable to recover.
West Ham will have been half expecting a trip to the Nou Camp in this round, but Frankfurt were able to upset the Catalan giants in the last round and they carried that buoyant mood into the game in the London Stadium.
West Ham will have no choice but to attack from the off here. They created a number of chances in the first leg after finding themselves in the same predicament because of the early goal and I don’t think the fact that they are no away from home will impact their attacking intent too much.
The Hammers also know that they need to score a minimum of two goals in this game if they want to progress without enduring the suffering of a penalty shootout. West Ham missed three big chances in the home leg, but they showcased their ability to create quality chances.
West Ham have scored two goals or more in four of their five away games in the Europa League this season and they know they have to repeat that here. The visitors are 2.37 on bet365 to score more than one goal in this match and I’m happy to add that to my builder given their creativity in the first leg.

A wave of attacks from the visitors should lead to Frankfurt taking a fair number of goal kicks. West Ham’s urgency should lead to some speculative efforts from range that further help increase those goal kick numbers from the home side. Frankfurt had a whopping 11 goal kicks in the first leg and bet365 have over 8.5 goal kicks priced at 2.00 as a single.
With West Ham on the front foot, Frankfurt resorted to relieving the pressure on their defence in large periods of the first leg and this meant that the Hammers won 26 throws overall. Frankfurt are also known for putting pressure on their opponents when they play out from the back, this can often lead to their opponents having a good amount of throws as the ball reaches the full backs. Frankfurt opponents have averaged over 27 throws per game in Europe this season and I can see West Ham winning a similar number here.
To be on the safe side, I’ll be taking over 20.5 throws in the match for West Ham as part of the builder because the London club are averaging just over 20 in the Europa League this season, but I see no reason why they can’t hit more given the way the first leg played out.

A bet builder is a kind of accumulator bet solely focussed on one match. A standard acca features multiple selections across different selections combined together into one bet. If one selection loses, the whole bet loses. A bet builder is similar but each selection is placed on the same match. Similar to the American prop bet, the bet builder goes into detail on a single match. Common selections include match outcome, total goals, cards, corners, and players to score.
