Freiburg vs Dortmund Preview

Last season saw Freiburg finish a Europa League qualifying 6th place in Bundesliga. They were also Pokal runners-up following a penalty shoot-out defeat to RB Leipzig. Some astute business in the transfer window looks to have given Christian Streich the tools for another successful campaign. This season couldn’t have started any better with a 4-0 win over Augsburg.
Borussia Dortmund’s biggest conundrum is to discover a way to cover the loss of Erling Haaland. Wide forward Karim Adeyemi signed from RB Salzburg. More traditional target man Sebastien Haller was snapped up for a reported £30m. Sadly his first battle is to overcome serious illness. In the short term, Anthony Modeste looks likely to do a reasonable job. After all, the 34-year-old scored 20 Bundesliga goals for Koln last term.
My focus is on one of Freiburg’s old guard, Vincenzo Grifo.
Freiburg vs Dortmund Best Bet
Grifo came to attention in the 2020/21 season producing nine goals and 10 assists. Last term adding nine goals and seven assists. In that campaign, he took 65% of Freiburg’s free kicks. The Italian forward has established himself as one of the best in the Bundesliga. Breisgau-Brasilianer were the highest scorers from set pieces last Bundesliga season with 24. Grifo scored on matchday one, and in this fixture last season too.

Nantes vs Lille Preview

Nantes kicked off their season with a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of PSG in the Trophée des Champions. Les Canaris drew another blank in opening their Ligue 1 campaign with a Derby de l’Ouest stalemate.
Two lacklustre performances in front of goal have increased the pressure on Antoine Kombouaré. A situation not eased by last season’s top-scorer Randal Kolo Muani scoring on his Bundesliga debut for new club Eintracht Frankfurt. That pressure could be turned up a notch with the visit of their bogey team. The home side have lost the last four here against Lille failing to score in the last three. We have to go back to 2004 for their last win against Les Dogues at Stade de la Beaujoire.
Lille’s defence of their 2020/21 title was atrocious. A 10th place finish saw them a huge 31 points behind the winning Parisians. New head coach Pablo Fonseca could not have wished for a better start this term. A Benjamin André goal after just 36 seconds set them on their way to a 4-1 hammering of newly-promoted Auxerre.
Nantes vs Lille Best Bet
The lead given by Andre’s opener was doubled just two minutes later by Jonathan David. The Canadian international went on to add his own second before half-time. The second two-goal haul in his last three Lille appearances. David had a prolific start to last term scoring 15 times by December. After finishing on 18 goals it is clear the 22-year-old forward is rejuvenated and the man to side with here.

Watford vs Burnley Preview

It was a game of two halves for Ismaila Sarr at West Brom on Monday night. Although bizarrely both key moments came from the same half. An incredible strike from fully 50-metres after 12-minutes gave Watford the lead. The Senegalese international then saw his tame 73rd-minute spot-kick saved to leave the game tied all square.
Rob Edwards conceded the Baggies “were clearly the better team”. The point leaves his new side unbeaten before facing Burnley following a very quick turnaround. Confidence will be high given the Hornets have won 10 successive home games at Championship level conceding just once.
The Vincent Kompany revolution is in full swing at Turf Moor. The Clarets have brought 10 players in with 13 heading through the exit. Recruiting with some help from his contacts in Belgium and Manchester whilst adding young talent from both EPL and EFL. An average of 70.4% possession from the opening two fixtures is the clearest indicator of the philosophy change.
Watford vs Burnley Best Bet
Of those 10 new faces, it is Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen that has most caught my eye. The 20-year-old has worked his way up the EFL pyramid. The Netherlands defender’s first loan was to Charlton in League One. Scoring three goals last season as he was sent to Coventry. With a clear licence to play advanced this term under Kompany, Maatsen has already racked up seven shots. Three attempts at goal coming in the season opener at Huddersfield. With another four efforts in the recent draw with Luton.
