Arsenal legend Gilberto Silva has words of encouragement for the Brazilian duo of Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus who are under pressure to perform.

Arsenal’s 2024-25 Premier League season has started off strongly with the club yet to face defeat in the league. They’ve faced some stern tests and considering that they’ve not lost, one could say they’ve passed those tests.

The performances of Arsenal’s Brazilian trio of Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Magalhaes has also been scrutinised with Martinelli and Magalhaes getting on the scoresheet but Jesus struggling.

We sat down with Arsenal invincible Gilberto Silva who had some words of advice for his compatriots.

Gabriel Martinelli has to be positively selfish

Martinelli’s most productive season was the 2022-23 one where he scored 15 goals and provided six assists in all competitions. Last season his productivity fell as he scored eight and created five in all competitions. In the current season, he’s already found the net twice and provided two assists as pressure is now building on him to replicate his form from two seasons ago.

Gilberto Silva’s advice to the forward is to be positively selfish and start taking more responsibility. He admires his work ethic but believes that Martinelli needs to start believing in his own abilities.

“He has all the potential to be a protagonist. He’s a good person and a hard worker. He fought hard to get there. He has to take responsibility and assume a certain protagonism. He has to get it into his head that this will be his season.”

“So you have to assume this protagonism and at the same time have a selfish side, not a negative one, but a positive selfishness, that there comes a time when you have to take responsibility and say, man, now it’s up to me, man, let me take care of it.”

Gabriel Jesus has been unfortunate with injuries and Havertz’s form has lessened the blow

Gilberto Silva was more sympathetic with his words for Gabriel Jesus who’s been plagued by injuries for the last two seasons. Silva understands that Jesus and Martinelli are fan favourites but also expresses that Jesus’ injuries have really disrupted his rhythm.

“These are two players who are also respected and loved by the fans. They have done an excellent job since they arrived at the club. Jesus has suffered a lot with injuries and that really gets in the way. You break your rhythm and you always have to start over. It’s a huge challenge for any player.

“Martinelli also suffered a little with that, I hope this year will be different. But in terms of performance, he has even been above Jesus lately.”

The 2002 World Cup winner adds that Jesus has lost a bit of space due to his injuries and Kai Havertz’s emergence as a contributor up top has lessened the minutes the Brazilian is expected to play. That being said, Gilberto Silva believes that as a No. 9, a healthy Jesus has a lot more potential than Havertz.”

“But injuries have had a big impact on Jesus’ loss of space, as he was out of action for a long time. It also opened up space for Havertz, who played in positions where Jesus would have played. He ended up doing well there.”

“However, as a nine, Jesus has the potential to do more if he’s healthy. But Havertz came in so well that many people didn’t even think about his absences.”
