We have some Inter vs Benfica bet builder tips lined up as the pair meet in Milan for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.
Score-wise, the tie could be over but I am not going to lie to you, I am giddy about the circumstances here. We have a card-happy referee, overseeing a game involving sides that aren’t famed for their composure.
I have a greedy selection but would not be against backing the selections individually.
In this article:
Champions League Quarter-Final, Wednesday, April 19th, 20:00 (UK)
Inter already have one foot in the semi finals thanks to the handy two-goal cushion from the first leg.
The Italians also hold a pretty impressive record in these sorts of circumstances. They’ve won the first leg in 18 official European competition ties and progressed from 17 of them.
In the Champions League, you would have to go back to 2011 to the last time La Nerazzurri lost by a big enough margin to eliminate them in 90 minutes on Wednesday, a 5-2 defeat against Schalke.
Simone Inzaghi could be forced to name the same XI as he did at the Estadio da Luz, leaving him light in central defence once again.
Milan Skriniar is ruled out here and fellow centre-back Stefan de Vrij will need a late assessment after coming off in the second half of the defeat against Monza at the weekend.
Benfica have it all to do, and this should see the experienced Nicolas Otamendi returned to the XI. The Argentina defender missed the first leg via suspension. Mihailo Ristic, Julian Draxler and Alexander Bah are all absent due to injury.
What do you get when a Spaniard meets an Italian and Portuguese side in the second leg of a Champions League quarter-final? Plenty of cards, surely.
Carlos del Cerro Grande has the whistle for this one – the aforementioned Spaniard – and in 16 appearances on home soil this campaign, he has dished out 68 yellows and eight red cards.
That is a staggering average of 0.50 red cards per game in La Liga.
The referee has sent nine players for an early bath in his last 13 games in all competitions, with at least one player walking in 61% of those fixtures.
On the continent, del Cerro Grande does not behave any differently.
This campaign, in three Champions League appearances, he has brandished 12 yellows and a red.
His form, combined with the magnitude of the occasion has got me really excited, really, really excited. So excited that I am not bothering with yellows and just going for two players to be sent off, playing out at 551.00 with bet365.
Disclaimer, anyone sent off in this clash will be suspended for the semi-finals, but I do not think this means players will behave accordingly.
There have been six red cards in Inter’s last seven games, which is promising. Only three have gone the way of La Nerazzurri, but it still looks good.
Despite not picking up a red card this season, Marcelo Brozovic looks the most likely candidate, he does have seven to his name though over the course of his career.
He has racked up 12 cards in 40 appearances for club and country, including the first leg.
The other selection is Nicolas Otamendi.
He dropped a clanger at the weekend and missed the home leg through injury but should return for this clash regardless.
The defender trumps Brozovic’s cards tally for the campaign with 16 in 45 appearances, one of which was red.
Unsurprisingly, he tops his sides charts for ill-discipline and will no doubt be using all his experience to try and contain Romelu Lukaku.
