Things haven’t gone well for Roberto Mancini’s Italy since winning the European Championships at Wembley last year. They failed to qualify for the World Cup and they were comprehensively beaten by Argentina in the Finalissima this week.
They take on a Germany side that has rediscovered its mojo since Hansi Flick took the reins, and this could be another humbling defeat for the Italians if they don’t improve significantly here. This will be the first time these sides have met since 2016.
World Cup-winning coach Joachim Low departed the German national team after the Euros, and they are yet to taste defeat under their new coach Hansi Flick. The Germans have won seven and drawn one during Flick’s tenure so far, and they are averaging a staggering four goals per game over that period.
Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini are still at the heart of the Italian defence, but there are signs that their defensive powers are waning in recent matches. The 3-0 defeat at the hands of Argentina showed there are weaknesses to exploit, and Germany have proven themselves to be ruthless in their pursuit of goals.

As part of my bet365 builder for this, I’ll be taking Germany to score over one goal in the match. Italy have conceded six goals in the three matches they have played in 2022 and all of the German attacking talent will want to show their best in order to nail down a spot in the starting eleven ahead of the World Cup.
Ilkay Gundogan was pivotal in Man City’s final day of the season turnaround against Aston Villa that saw them lift the title and he has looked dangerous for the national team in his recent matches, so he should come into this game with bags of confidence.
The midfielder averaged 2.6 shots per game in Germany’s World Cup qualifying campaign and he found the net five times in the seven group matches that he played in. Ilkay averaged 1.9 shots per game across all of his matches for club and country this season, and I expect him to pop up in plenty of shooting positions in this one.
bet365 have the German priced at 1.80 to make two shots or more in the match, and this represents good value given the players form and overall shooting statistics. Italy aren’t in great form and this should mean that Flick’s men are on top for large periods of the game; helping our cause here.
The final bangle for this one is corners. Germany should win corners as they sustain pressure on the Italian defence, and Mancini’s men may look to take advantage of their aerial threat from set-pieces. Italy’s last 10 matches are averaging 9.6 corners per game, but I’m expecting Germany to contribute more than the average of 3.4 corners per game against Italy here.
Germany’s last 10 matches are averaging 8.75 corners per game, with their opponents averaging just 1.5 per game in that period. Interestingly, the only time they’ve faced a higher calibre of opponents in that run came in their last match against the Netherlands. There were 10 corners in that match, six for the Dutch and four for the Germans, so I expect a similar number here.
Adding over eight corners in the match to our builder gives us an overall price of 7.00.

A bet builder is a kind of accumulator bet solely focussed on one match. A standard acca features multiple selections across different selections combined together into one bet. If one selection loses, the whole bet loses. A bet builder is similar but each selection is placed on the same match. Similar to the American prop bet, the bet builder goes into detail on a single match. Common selections include match outcome, total goals, cards, corners, and players to score.
