This will be the third time I have previewed this particular Premier League game for bettingexpert this weekend. A bet from Merseyside makes up my Expert Acca Pick, a leg of my Super Sunday Acca, and now my longshot punt derives from Anfield.

I just hope the clash lives up to expectations. What do I expect? Chaos.

  • Selection: Lucas Digne Goal and Card
  • Best Odds: 67.50 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 1/10

Odds as at 18:50 August 30th, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa: Anfield Anarchy

England, Premier League, Sunday, September 3rd 14:00 (UK)

Villa’s game with Newcastle on match day one is a great insight into Unai Emery’s managerial principles. He will not compromise.

It does not matter how many times his side’s high line gets exposed or how many times the opposition is successful with their high press; he won’t let his side surrender the values he has instilled.

Newcastle put five past them that afternoon; since then, though, Villa have put three past Burnley, four past Everton and five past Hibernian.

Their games against sides that finished above them in the table last season saw plenty of goals as well. In 12 games, The Villans have scored 15 and conceded 29.

Liverpool’s games have been brilliant fun as well this season.

A lot has been made of their 2-1 victory in Tyneside at the weekend because they did it with ten men.

Seven points from a possible nine and still without a clean sheet, I am sure there are goals at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Longshot: Box Office Lucas

The bet, at a cool 67.50, is for Lucas Digne to score and be booked.

In case you were wondering why the French fullback is that price to score, it is because he has scored 15 goals in 357 club appearances (0.05 goals per 90), which roughly means he should be around 20.00 to find the net.

I fancy him to bag against Liverpool for a few reasons.

The first is his direct opponent, Trent Alexander-Arnold. He’s a player famed for his ability on the ball, not off it.

At Stamford Bridge, Ben Chilwell really enjoyed himself. Chelsea’s left wing-back constantly found himself with acres of space as TAA struggled to get himself back in possession. Chilwell had a goal disallowed and grabbed the assist; he also found himself one-on-one around eight yards from goal but tried to score it to someone bizarrely.

Granted, he was playing in a more advanced position, but Anthony Gordon gave TAA a torrid time at St James’ Park as well.

The former Everton winger scored the opener, had four shots and should have got TAA sent off.

There is also no Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool, which should see Joe Gomez covering TAA down their right-hand side. A combination that does not fill me with confidence.

Digne, operating as a wing-back, should get plenty of space and could even match the offensive output of his counterpart Matty Cash, who scored a brace at Turf Moor last weekend.

Digne goals are a rarity; Digne cards are a lot more common.

He has racked up three in four this season, 28 in the Premier League, and the fact that he is an ex-Toffee only sweetens the deal.
