Four games into the 2023-24 Premier League season and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have collected ten points, winning three and drawing one.
Record signing Declan Rice has fit in the Arsenal team like Cinderella’s glass slipper and etched himself into Emirates Stadium’s history with a last-minute winner against Manchester United on Matchday 4.
The same, however, cannot be said for Kai Havertz. The German’s performances have been average, and his starting position could be in doubt in light of Fabio Vieira’s uptick in form, as the Portuguese midfielder has registered two assists in two appearances in the league so far.
Former Gunner Mikael Silvestre discussed the performances of the three players in a chat with us.
In This Article:
The former France international expressed his concern for the German, pointing to his miss against Man Utd as an indicator of a player lacking confidence. He adds that Havertz needs goals and assists to get back into a good rhythm.
“That miss against United was a perfect example of a player that’s doubting himself, and it’s a difficult moment right now.”
‘A lot is playing on his mind.”
“He will need to get some goals and assists.”
Despite that, Silvestre backs the German to come good as he believes he has the maturity to find the keys and he will have Mikel Arteta’s support.
“He’s mature enough to find the keys, and Arteta will support him through this period because they invested heavily in him, and he should be an important player for the squad this season.”
The four-time Premier League winner with Manchester United commented on whether Fabio Vieira should start.
Silvestre says that convincing the manager that you can start is part of playing at the highest level, and Vieira has to do that. The Frenchman believes that the former FC Porto man will get ample opportunities to stake his claim to a starting spot this season.
“Part of playing at this level is having competition, and he has to convince the manager that he is now ahead of his competition.”
“This season, he’s improved from last season, and with all the games they have to play, he will get opportunities to show his worth and contribute.”
As per the former Man Utd star, when it comes to choosing the best defensive midfielder in the league, it’s a close call between Declan Rice, Rodri and Casemiro.
“In terms of the best central defensive midfielder, it’s a close call between Rodri, Casemiro and Rice. Those three are the best in the league.”
Silvestre further added that he was not surprised by Rice adapting to life so quickly at Arsenal as he knew the league, and joining a team that dominates games in the league has made the adaptation process easier.
“I’m not surprised about Rice’s adaptation because he knows the league, he’s very intelligent, and he’s played Arsenal so many times. It’s not as if he’s coming from abroad.”
“It’s easier to settle into a team that’s dominating the league and playing well. It’s not a surprise to me, but he’s doing his job very well.”
