RB Leipzig (1.26) are almighty favourites at home against Red Star Belgrade (12.0) on Wednesday night. However, I’m confident the visitors will cause a fair few problems at the Red Bull Arena.
It’s not particularly easy to gauge the level of clubs, such as Red Star, in their domestic leagues. The side from the capital are their very best back home and a dominant force in the Super Liga. They’re used to scoring goals. They led at the break at the Etihad in the opening round, then were involved in a very entertaining 2-2 draw with Young Boys.
BTTS is trending around the 1.76 mark, nothing huge in terms of price, but I think it’s probably a little big and provides some value. Leipzig have been involved in two 3-1 scorelines in the Champions League this campaign, those coming against Man City and Young Boys. Half of their eight Bundesliga matches have seen both sides hit the back of the net.
The majority of this price is on the visitors to score. They’re around 1.61 to score alone. Barak Bakhar is the Red Star boss. He was appointed in May 2023 and has seen his side score in all 13 matches this campaign.
Jean-Phillippe Krasso, Peter Olayinka, Osman Bukari and Mirko Ivanic have been the biggest goal threats for the Serbian outfit this campaign. The quartet have all notched three or more goals in the top flight, whilst Bukari has scored in both matches in this competition.
Leipzig’s squad is excellent, especially from an attacking perspective. Lois Openda has started life in Germany extremely well after his move from Lens; the Belgian has bagged six times in eight in the Bundesliga so far. Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons appear to be extraordinary talents and are just 20 years old.
It’ll be a shock if the home side fires a blank in this meeting. They’ve bagged 23 times in ten outings in the Bundesliga and Champions League combined, only failing to score in one of those games despite missing two penalties. BTTS is the play here with fairly high hopes that the visiting side can continue their strong scoring streak.
I’m combining two selections for my bigger-priced bet. The first is the man I’ve just mentioned, the Belgian forward Lois Openda. I’m confident that the 23-year-old can find the back of the net here against a side that will allow plenty of chances. Openda bagged a brace over the weekend, with his first arriving inside 60 seconds. He’s already scored in this competition that came here against Man City. In Switzerland, he had six shots, three on target, and racked up an xG of 1.12, either unlucky or wasteful.
Here’s the higher odds part of the selection. Osman Bukari has enjoyed his opening two matches of this competition. He’s bagged in both games so far this campaign. The Ghanaian is a chunky price to register a shot on target here, which comes in at 3.25 alone. Of course, the data is limited, but I’m willing to take a punt in that he can continue his fine offensive form.
I’m convinced both of these attackers will start on Wednesday night. Openda has been a regular for Leipzig since his arrival and has been a consistent scorer for a number of seasons. Osman Bukari was Man of the Match in his 2-2 draw with Young Boys at Stadion Rajko Mitic.
Two forward players in fine form, both to cause their opponents problems with a price of 5.50, it’s got to be worth a go, right?
Leipzig does not appear to have any fresh injury doubts. Willi Orban and El Chadaille Bitshiabu are the only confirmed absentees. It’s expected to be a similar side to the one that started over the weekend. The central midfield may change from Saturday’s win, and Xaver Schlager may return to the starting lineup. Offensively, there are no issues; Forsberg, Simon, Poulsen and Openda should all start from the first whistle.
The Serbian outfit looks to arrive with a fully fit squad. There were no injuries in their weekend victory over Javor. Red Star have started the same side in both outings in this competition. There’s a strong possibility it’ll be the same eleven once again.
