Villarreal arrive at this stage after a couple of remarkable victories over Bayern Munich and Juventus in the knockout stages. The club from a city with a population of less than 50,000 will have to perform at the very peak of their powers to get anything from this relentless Liverpool side, but the tactical nous of Unai Emery will have them believing they are up to task.

Klopp and his men are still fighting on all fronts this season. They are embroiled in a tantalising title battle with Manchester City and have already booked their spot in the FA Cup final. Navigating their way past Villarreal would see them book their place in the Champions League final and continue their dream of an unprecedented quadruple.

Liverpool have lost just once in their last 26 games in all competitions. This came at home to Inter Milan and the result didn’t matter as the team progressed anyway. Villarreal are languishing in seventh place in La Liga and their focus is now on achieving the impossible in the Champions League.

Klopp’s team’s home form has been formidable and this is largely down to their rampant forward line. The addition of Luis Diaz has given the German even more options when selecting his team and the depth has made Liverpool more menacing. This attacking threat often translated into the Reds having plenty of shots. The team are averaging just under 20 shots per game in their last 20 home games and have conceded just under 6 shots in that period. I expect this type of domination to continue here and that’s why I’m adding Liverpool to have over 19.5 shots to my bet builder.

As previously mentioned Liverpool will also know the importance of taking a lead to Spain and I expect them to push forward and try to kill the tie in the first leg if possible. This should lead to a lot of shots for the home side. Moreover, Villarreal conceded a whopping 45 shots over the two legs with Bayern Munich; further supporting our shots angle here.

Naturally, shots from one side should lead to goal kicks for the other and Villarreal had a staggering 38 goal kicks in the matches versus Bayern. I can see this match playing out in the same manner and I’m happy to back goal kicks for the visitors as a result. The line is set at a very high 10.5, but it is reasonable given the way that Bayern were able to get at Villarreal in the last round.

I’ll also be backing the away side to make tackles in this match. Liverpool opponents are averaging 19.7 tackles per game in their last 10 home matches and Villarreal will have a lot of defending to do on Wednesday night. Over 16.5 tackles for the visitors presents some value given the nature of the game and the recent numbers against Klopp’s side.

Liverpool should dominate the ball here and as a result Virgil Van Dijk should make a heap of passes. Upamecano made more than 100 passes in both legs against Villarreal and Van Dijk should find similar amounts of space to spray the ball around. Bet 365 currently have the Dutchman’s pass line at 86.5 and this represents good value.

Ill round off my bet builder relying on Liverpool dominance by adding the home side to win the match. I can’t see Villarreal causing a huge amount of problems and I think they would take a one goal deficit going into the second leg.
