We have the best Lyon vs PSG bet builder tips for Ligue 1’s Sunday night fixture at Groupama Stadium as both teams will look to head into the international break with a win.
Once the dominant side in France, Lyon have fallen downwards in recent years and now appear to be a club in crisis. Mbappe is back, and for the bet builder’s sake, let’s hope he’s firing.
Bet Builder odds: 2.50
France, Ligue 1, Sunday 3rd September, 19:45 (UK)

Lyon are an absolute mess both on and off the field. They had one of their worst-ever pre-seasons in living memory and obtained just one point from three games. Their defence looks all over the place, and despite keeping a clean sheet last week vs Nice, they still looked far from convincing. They’d have lost that fixture against a more clinical and ruthless team, but PSG won’t be so generous. The capital club got their first win of the season vs Lens and put in their best performance of the campaign. They should build on that.
Lyon has huge issues off the field, with new owner John Textor already in a legal battle with former president Jean-Michel Aulas. Lyon is under close scrutiny from the DNCG, who are the French football financial watchdog and are limited with wages and what business they can do in the transfer market.
This has led to an extremely bad atmosphere, and I’ve not even mentioned manager Laurant Blanc yet, who is under massive pressure. Blanc’s tactics have been heavily criticized, and this looks like an ideal chance to face Les Gones. An away win is highly likely, and it should be by a decent margin.
The way that Lyon have defended this season makes me think that PSG could easily cover an over 2.5 goal line all on their own. They are all at sea with organization, and in their home match against Montpellier, it was especially noticeable the issues they have. Even last week in the 0-0 draw vs Nice, their opponents cut through them often but were let down by the final ball or poor finish.
Kylian Mbappé is back, and PSG have a plethora of weapons to take advantage of. The visitors themselves have only kept one clean sheet this season, so Lyon might be able to get on the scoreboard themselves. It could get to a stage where the best form of defence is to attack for the hosts. I can not be convinced that Lyon finds the back of the net, though, which is why I wouldn’t recommend adding both teams to score to this bet builder.
It looked like Kylian Mbappé was going to be leaving the club this window, but that doesn’t appear to be happening now. The French captain was kept out of commission in the latter part of pre-season, but PSG panicked by allowing him back into the fold after the 0-0 draw with Lorient. He scored from the penalty spot vs Toulouse but was clearly not at his best. Mbappé was far better against Lens last week, though, and again got on the scoresheet.
His pace should be lethal against this Lyon backline, and you have to imagine he will get a glutton of chances here. It also helps that he’s on penalty duty, so it feels like an automatic bet to take him as an anytime scorer. On its own, this pick probably offers little value, but when you add it to a bet builder, it bumps up the price.
