Liverpool vs Man City Preview

Saturday, July 30th, 17:00 (UK)

Fixtures between Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are nothing short of sublime. The quality of the two sides is unmatched in the Premier League. Recent results show that as the three times these sides met last campaign saw 13 goals.

The Community Shield is the first piece of silverware up for grabs in the 2022/2023 season but probably the least-anticipated in terms of importance. However, it will be a good indication to see where both sides are heading into the Premier League season that starts the following weekend.

2019 was the last time these teams met in this competition as Manchester City won the trophy at Wembley via a penalty shootout. Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was the only man to miss from the spot after Joel Matip equalised as Raheem Sterling opened the scoring early on.

Manchester City have played just two preseason matches over the summer. They took on Mexican outfit Club America in Houston and Bayern Munich at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. City won both games by one-goal margins in the USA.

Liverpool have played twice the amount of matches over the last couple of weeks. They started the tour of Asia with a 4-0 defeat to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United then quickly bounced back with wins against Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig. New star signing Darwin Nunez helped himself to four goals in 45 minutes in the latter. Most recently however, RB Salzburg beat Klopp’s side at the Red Bull Arena despite a hugely dominant second half from the English side.

  • The 18/19 and 21/22 Premier League season saw Man City pip Liverpool to the title by just a single point on both occasions.

It’s hard to not see goals in this game between two fantastic sides who love to attack. Erling Haaland will be Pep’s main goal threat and will be desperate to get himself on the scoresheet. Mo Salah is another man who could quite easily get himself a goal alongside Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

Offside numbers have been incredibly high in recent seasons for teams who play against Liverpool, the high line is a huge factor in why teams are often caught in an illegal position. In the 2019 Community Shield, Man City were caught offside three times and across the three matches last year 12 offsides were given against them.

Mo Salah loves to shoot, often greedy at times but there’s no doubting his quality in front of goal. The Egyptian scored 23 times in 35 appearances last campaign and a further eight in the Champions League. He averaged four shots per game in the most recent Premier League season and I’m happy to back the 30-year-old to have two shots or more at the King Power.

With the season yet to start it always adds a little more trickiness in terms of the betting side of things, both sides will be wanting to win the game but starting the league season in winning ways is definitely a bigger factor for each club. City are the favourites to win the title but Liverpool will be right on their tails as they have been so often in recent seasons.

  • Both Teams to Score
  • Man City 3+ Offsides
  • Mo Salah 2+ Shots
