With the Scottish Premiership set to kick off on the 30th of July, we decided to see which players in the league are topping the social media table, more specifically, the Instagram table. Which player’s summer vacation photos are scorching the social media platform and which ones need to up their ‘gram!
We looked at the squads of all 12 teams for the 2022-23 Scottish Premiership and then using an automated tool, scraped the number of followers on their Instagram profiles to compile these rankings.
In this article:
Celtic and Rangers are the most famous Scottish clubs all over the world and unsurprisingly, it was stars from both sides that topped the Instagram popularity charts.
In fact, among the top 10 most followed Scottish Premiership stars, only one was not from either Celtic or Rangers. That happened to be Sean Goss of Motherwell.
Joe Hart was the table topper with over 1.4 million followers. His days as the main man in goal for Manchester City and a stint at Tottenham was also helpful in boosting his Instagram profile.
Hart is followed by Rangers star Ianis Hagi. The son of Romanian legend Gheorghe Haghi has close to 355,000 followers on Instagram – still quite far away from Hart.
Alfredo Morelos, James Tavernier and Kyogo Furuhashi finish off the top five most followed Scottish Premiership stars.
New Celtic signing, Aaron Mooy, could not break into the top 10 with his 130,000 followers being a bit less than that of Fashion Sakala and Goss.
None of the top 10 most followed Scottish Premiership stars are Scottish.
The most followed Scottish Premiership star is veteran Gers shot-stopper, Allan McGregor, with around 121,000 followers.
McGregor is followed by Rangers’ Ryan Jack (113,000 followers), Celtic’s Anthony Ralston (82,452 followers) and Hearts’ Craig Gordon who has 77,134 followers.
Well, had Scott Brown (around 268,000 followers) still been an active player in the Scottish Premiership, he would have been the most followed Scottish player and fourth most followed overall.
Hart, Hagi and Goss top the list for Celtic, Rangers and Motherwell respectively but what about the other sides?
This graphic shows who is the most followed star for each 2022-23 Scottish Premiership side.
We do see three Scots here, with Gordon (Hearts), Jamie Murphy (St. Johnstone), Kevin Nisbett (Hibs) and Bruce Anderson (Livingston).
For newly promoted Kilmarnock, it’s Welshman Ash Taylor leading the Instagram charts with 18,400 followers.
