The second leg of the EFL Cup semi-final takes place on Tuesday, Newcastle lead the tie after winning 1-0 at St Mary’s last week. Here at bettingexpert Expert Insights, we have constructed a bet builder for this semi-final second-leg clash.

Newcastle vs Southampton Preview

England, EFL Cup, Tuesday, January 31st, 20:00 (UK)

A place in the EFL Cup final is up for grabs. The Saints have a massive job on their hands as they head to St James’ Park. Eddie Howe’s side will be expected to get the job done given their impressive performances throughout the campaign.

Newcastle have been tremendous. They’ve conceded 11 goals all season with a staggering 12 clean sheets. The Magpies have now kept 10 consecutive shutouts against Premier League opposition.

Only three teams have scored fewer than Southampton’s 17 in the league. They’ve relied on Ward-Prowse and his set pieces to get them out of trouble. They’ll need a goal here to give themselves any chance but only three teams in 13 have scored at St James’ Park this season.

It’s a mountainous task for the Saints. History provides even less confidence for the travelling side. The last time a team overturned a first-leg home defeat came all the way back in 1986/1987. They’ve had four fewer days to prepare for this clash after beating Blackpool on Saturday afternoon.

There are no new injury concerns for Newcastle, the same starting XI will be expected to start once again. However, many fans wish Alexander Isak gets the nod after his impressive cameos since returning from injury.

Southampton appear to have a full squad according to Nathan Jones, Duke Caleta-Car is available for selection after being sent off in the feisty opener whilst James Bree is amongst the squad after his move from Luton only a few days ago.

The last time Southampton kept a clean sheet at St James’ Park was in 1997. They’ve come away victorious in one of the last nine meetings here, losing four of the previous five.

Newcastle vs Southampton Bet Builder

Southampton will have to take the game to Newcastle at some point, I’m expecting that they’ll increase the attacking pressure during the second half. Eddie Howe’s side have been dominant at home but forcing Nick Pope into taking two goal kicks shouldn’t be a huge ask.

Southampton continue to rely on James Ward-Prows. He’s a dead ball specialist and the skipper so he may be the man that they turn to once again here. The 28-year-old has registered a shot in seven of his previous 10 matches in the Premier League and managed one in the reverse leg at St Mary’s.

With a place at Wembley at stake, I expect this will be another low-scoring affair. Backing the under on goals looks a good way in here given how impressive Newcastle have been at the back. A league-low of 11 goals have been scored against The Magpies across 20 top-flight clashes. They’ve also kept a staggering eight consecutive home shutouts, a club record.

Since the restart, Newcastle have yet to feature in a match with four or more goals scored. Just three of their 13 competitive fixtures here have seen over 3.5 match goals. Nathan Jones’ side have tightened at the back with nine of their previous 10 matches seeing three or fewer goals.

With all things said, this bet builder should have every chance of cashing. I can’t see this tie being a thriller but that is to be expected with a place in the final up for grabs. Eddie Howe’s side will look to control the contest but ultimately it’s all eyes on the visitors, they arrive here as underdogs, but stranger things have happened in cup competitions.

  • Newcastle Over 1.5 2nd Half Goal Kicks
  • James Ward-Prowse Over 0.5 Shots
  • Under 3.5 Goals

Bet Builder odds: 2.10
