EFL Best Bets: Saturday, September, 24th

We have reached the halfway stage in the last international break prior to the World Cup. Which of course means a break in action for the top two tiers of English football. Therefore it’s time for the lower leagues to take centre stage. As always there are a host of betting opportunities and I’ve outlined my three favourite angles of attack from the EFL.

In this article:

Bradford vs AFC Wimbledon Preview

England, League Two, Saturday, September 24th, 15:00 (UK)

After a shaky start to the season Bradford have hit the form that made them one of the pre-season title favourites in League Two. The Bantams made it three successive wins as they defeated Stevenage 3-0 last weekend. That win against a side who had lost just once prior to that lifted Mark Hughes’ side up to 5th. Only leaders Leyton Orient have a better return than their 13 points from the last five games.

In contrast a run of four consecutive defeats has seen the Dons slide down the table. Johnnie Jackson did at least see his side score their first goal in four league games in the defeat at Carlisle last weekend. After last season’s relegation their fans would have hoped for a better showing in the lower tier. But sitting in 17th place just four points above the drop zone will have them looking anxiously over their shoulders.

Bradford vs AFC Wimbledon Best Bet

Former Manchester City and Wales boss Hughes seems to have got his message across to his players. Only Salford have had more possession of the ball. No side has more goals from open play than their 12. Benefiting most from that is striker Andy Cook in red hot form with 11 goals in 11 games across all competitions. Eight coming in his nine league appearances. Bradford are keeping it tight at the back too. Conceding just seven times in League Two, only two sides shipping fewer. Defeat has become an all too familiar habit for AFC Wimbledon. Only two sides in the fourth tier have lost more times this campaign and this looks sure to be another.

  • Selection: Bradford to win (TRACKED BET)
  • Best Odds: 1.83 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 7/10

Grimsby vs Swindon Preview

England, League Two, Saturday, September 24th, 15:00 (UK)

Grimsby returned to life back in the EFL with an opening day defeat to current leaders Leyton Orient. Since then the Mariners have put together an unbeaten run of seven league games. A 1-0 win at Colchester last weekend was a fourth league victory on the road this season. The win in Essex moved them up to 8th but they have a game in hand on all seven sides above them.

Coincidentally Swindon also lost on the opening weekend of the season. After that heavy 3-0 reverse at Harrogate the Robins too have gone unbeaten in League Two. Although only recording one win from their first seven games they have now recorded back-to-back successes. The 1-0 win at Doncaster last weekend was a deserved one but in a game of few chances. In fact the first half produced just one shot between the two sides.

Grimsby vs Swindon Best Bet

Paul Hurst has his side very well organised. Highlighted by the fact the newly promoted outfit have conceded just five goals so far this term. Only league leaders Leyton Orient have kept it tighter. However it hasn’t quite clicked in attack with just five sides scoring fewer than their eight goals. They have also struggled to replicate their away form at Blundell Park. Drawing all three games so far. Scott Lindsey’s side have also kept it tight since that opening day defeat. Conceding just five more times in the eight games played since then. All three Grimsby home games and the last four Swindon away games have seen under 2.5 goals. I’m taking that trend to continue here in what looks a very close contest.

  • Selection: Under 2.5 goals
  • Best Odds: 1.87 (Betfair)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Stevenage vs Harrogate Preview

England, League Two, Saturday, September 24th, 15:00 (UK)

Stevenage were many a shrewd judge’s dark horses for a promotion tilt this season. They have made an excellent start under Steve Evans who seems a perfect fit for the club. Six wins from their opening nine league games and 19 points on the board sees them 4th in the table. The Boro have already bounced back from a disappointing defeat to Bradford last weekend. Cruising past Wycombe 3-0 in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday. They will now look to get back to winning ways in the league.

Harrogate snapped their five game losing streak in all competitions with a 0-0 draw at Stockport last weekend. Although they twice had the woodwork to thank for leaving Edgeley Park with a point. The EFL’s longest serving manager, Simon Weaver has now seen his side pick up just eight points from their opening nine games.

Stevenage vs Harrogate Best Bet

Broadhall Way would not be high up on the list of venues Harrogate would pick to get their first win in six games. Stevenage have been fearsome on home soil this season. Winning all six of their fixtures across three competitions. They have kept a clean sheet in four of those too including each of the last three. I expect them to add another win to their tally here. But the price is reflective of that and too prohibitive to tip at a best price of 1.62. Harrogate have failed to score from open play in any of their last six games. A total of just over nine hours. I can’t see them putting their recent problems right here. So both teams not to score looks like a great way to get Stevenage onside at a much better price. That of course also adds the 0-0 draw as well as a shock away win-to-nil to our armoury.

  • Selection: Both Teams To Score – No
  • Best Odds: 1.87 (Betfair)
  • Stakes: 6/10
