Papa Johns Trophy Best Bets: Tuesday, September, 20th

The beginning of the International break signals a two-week hiatus across Europe’s top leagues. However, Tuesday sees the second round of Papa Johns Trophy fixtures and, with them, a host of betting opportunities. I’ve outlined my three favourite angles of attack, all with a common theme.

In this article:

Barnsley vs Newcastle U21 Preview

England, Papa Johns Trophy, Tuesday, September 20th, 19:00 (UK)

League One promotion hopefuls Barnsley welcome Newcastle U21’s to Oakwell in search of a win to lift them off the foot of Group 5. The Tykes are in good form and a weekend win at Cambridge moved them up into the play-off places. The impressive 3-0 success came despite Liam Kitching’s red card on 68 minutes with his side only a goal to the good. In contrast to their league form, the Yorkshire side suffered a disappointing home defeat to Lincoln in the opening fixture of this tournament.

Newcastle’s youngsters opened their campaign with a point in a 0-0 draw with Doncaster before losing on penalties. That result snapped a run of eight successive defeats in this competition. A sequence in which they scored just six times but conceded a whopping 25 times – letting in at least three goals in six of those games.

Michael Duff seems to be getting his message across at Barnsley. The highly regarded ex-Cheltenham boss has navigated a recent tough run of fixtures. Securing a draw with league leaders Ipswich and defeating playoff rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Cambridge.

It’s always a tough challenge for U21 sides facing senior opposition, which has been the case for the Magpies over recent seasons. This represents a great opportunity for the home side to extend their current impressive form.

Rochdale vs Liverpool U21 Preview

England, Papa Johns Trophy, Tuesday, September 20th, 19:00 (UK)

Rochdale’s woeful start to the season continued at the weekend. A 3-0 reverse at Northampton sees them rooted firmly to the bottom of the League Two table. Dale have just two points from their opening nine fixtures. Their only season success came against Burton in the League Cup. However, they do have a point from their opening game of this competition. It could have been better after coming from two goals down at Accrington to lead 3-2 until an injury-time own goal took the tie to penalties, missing out on a bonus point after losing 4-3 on spot kicks.

An 88th-minute Layton Stewart goal proved to be a consolation for Liverpool U21 in a 2-1 defeat at Salford. First-team trio Arthur, Fabio Carvalho and Nat Phillips all played 90 minutes for the under-21s in their victory over Leicester on Saturday. With 16 of the Reds players not on international duty, there is a chance we see a couple line up at Spotland. Although rules state only two players over the age of 21 are allowed to feature, we shouldn’t expect a side full of experience.

Rochdale vs Liverpool U21 Best Bet

It may seem strange to side with an out-of-form team sitting 92nd in the English football pyramid. But that is what I will be doing here. Rochdale have a massive relegation six-pointer with Colchester on Saturday. They will surely look to take some much-needed momentum into that clash at the Colchester Community Stadium. Especially with Liverpool-born new manager Jim Bentley only three games into his reign. But, Liverpool youngsters’ recent record in this competition means I have to take them with the home side odds-against.

The Merseysiders have collected one point in this competition in the last three seasons, with a losing streak now totalling seven, conceding 4.29 goals on average per game.

  • Selection: Rochdale to win
  • Best Odds: 2.45 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 6/10

Ipswich vs Arsenal U21 Preview

England, Papa Johns Trophy, Tuesday, September 20th, 19:45 (UK)

Ipswich extended their unbeaten start to the League One season to nine at the weekend. Ultimately though, they would have been disappointed to only draw 2-2 with promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday. After taking a 4th-minute lead, the Tractor Boys extended their lead in the 71st minute through a Dominic Iorfa own goal. Despite quickly having their advantage halved, they looked set for all three points until Michael Smith equalised a minute from time. That result kept Kieran McKenna’s side top of the table, and now he will want to build on their 6-0 thrashing of Northampton Town in their first game of this competition.

Arsenal Under-21s were one of only five (of 15) academy sides to record wins in the opening round of games in this competition. An away win and clean sheet in beating League One outfit Cambridge United 2-0 an eye-catching result. Mehmet Ali’s side have made an unbeaten start to their Premier League 2 campaign, though they needed to come from behind with ten men after Henry Jeffcott’s red card to salvage a point in the weekend clash with Wolves.

Ipswich vs Arsenal U21 Best Bet

Ipswich have one of the largest squads at this level and should be able to use that to their advantage in this competition. Players such as Freddie Ladapo, Marcus Harness, and Richard Keogh all came off the bench at Hillsborough and will hope for starting berths here. While on deadline day, signing Gassan Ahadme scored twice for Burton in their 4-2 defeat of Leicester U21 in the opening round of games last month. The ex-Norwich striker will be hoping to make his first start for his new club in a tournament where he thrives.

With the young Gunners missing a couple of players through international call-ups, I expect the home side to be too strong at Portman Road.
